Subject: Rear end nightmare...almost IP: Logged
Message: My 02 QC began making a whining sound out of the rear about 2 months back. It was barely noticable, but it was there under acceleration. Took it to the dealer when it was loud enough to hear over my Magnalow exhaust. They called and said that I needed to come in and drive it with the service manager. Well, we took it out and he said "Oh, that's just tire noise." OK...I don't agree. He said since it drove OK, there was nothing he could do.
So I take it to my auto hobby shop on our base and take the rear cover off. You wouldn't believe what I found. It appears that the factory didn't install the breather valve on top of the differential and every time I drove in the rain, water was getting in the housing. The ring and carrier gears were totally shredded. It was only a matter of miles before I would have been stranded on the side of the road.
I called the service manager and told him to get his a$$ down there with a tow truck or I'd just call roadside asst, then corporate complaint line. Amazingly, he showed up in 30 mins with a flatbed and took it in for a complete rear-end overhaul. He told me "I think I'll be the one to call the complaint line" and jokingly offered me a job.
So don't let little noises go on and on until something blows up!
