My manual states I can go 7500 miles between oil changes under certain conditions. A Dodge service manager said DC would not get involved unless the engine was sludged up.(whatever thats worth) This Dodge dealership sells Amsoil products as well.(just the 7500 oil I believe)

It is not what you say. It is a design flaw.
Obvious that you did not read the article.

Message: What I find interesting about the article is that only Durango's are mentioned, and only a few of the letters specify which engine. No mention of oil brand or viscosity or service. There were at least 4 engines in use from 1998 to 2001 in the Durango. Do they all have the sludge problem? What about Dakotas, Ram's, and Vans that use the same engines?

To answer the first post,
First, I define "extended drain intervals" as anything beyond the automobile manufacturers recommendations.
Mobil1 is suitable for "extended drain intervals" as indicated by the ACEA A3 & A5 ratings, but ... ExxonMobil does not promote this in the U.S. (the Mobil1 oils sold in the U.S. are "watered down" versions of their European counterparts ... where oil changes are now in the 10,000 - 15,000 range). This is because it is formulated for a particular price target at Walmart, etc.
The automakers don't promote extended drains and most U.S. consumers think that 3000 mile oil drain intervals are a virtue (passed down from their fathers and grandfathers). However, most owners manuals are now recommending 5,000 - 7,500 oil change intervals, and some manufacturers > 7,500 when using synthetic oil (Mercedes Benz is one example).
Think about this ... automobile manufacturers feel that they HAVE to post the minimum ... should the vehicle owner use the cheapest generic brand on the market with weak base oil and weak additives.
In closing ... on the back of a Mobil1 oil bottle (distributed in the U.S.) they state to NOT exceed the manufacturers recommendations.

Message: First the problems of blown engines are very serious and curious as they seem to effect the Durango's.There is no difference in the engines other than exh manifolds and small cal changes. The real culprits here appear to be the dealers as they failed repeatedly to diagnose the problems even after several tries.Mains do not seize, conrod bearings don't spin and rods don't break unless there has been a long term problem or are out of oil.Sounds very much like the result of misdiagnosis of the real problem. These engines did not at any time show this in testing w/dino oil (10w-30.GF-2 or GF-3) depending on the year of the vehicle. These engines did not ever sludge even with extended periods of oil service. These failures seems to indicate a long term problem that was not diagnosed. The intake pan gasket failures may be the right place to look. That will in time make sludge. The leakage problem would be compounded in a heavy vehicle with a small engine.I'd like to see what gear ratio's the affected Durango's were running.A proper oil analysis probably would have shown a high fuel concentation and other contaniments in the oil.Extended periods of fuel contaniments would severely damage the oil pump.A few dry periods ( even short ones )could then lead to the kind of failures seen here.
