Subject: V8 Swap 89 Dakota
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anyone done a V8 swap on a V6 Dakota, mine is an 89 4x4 5 speed manual. Will the 5 speed trans live behind the V8. My truck has 160,000 miles on it. The clutch is starting to chatter a little and I was thinking of rebuilding an engine on the side and dropping it in when the clutch goes out. Only reason I thought of putting an 8 in it is for a little more power to pull 31x10.50 tires, I was thinking it may be cheaper to do this than a gear swap because I can do the work myself.

Thanks, Jay.

Since GenI's were designed with the V-6 in mind, the V-8 swap is tough. The only help you have in this area was the Shelby Dakotas, but they were modified to take the 318 (5.2). The main reason for the GenII front end in 1991 was to accomodate the V-8. The firewall is the primary change. Your best bet is to find a reasonably priced '92 or '93, which had the best performing 5.2's of all.

naw- it aint that hard to do the swap. i did it on my 88 4cyl 5 speed dak. you just have to get the schmaker mounts from www.engine-swaps.com
its a little tight in there, but run so electric fans and the v6 HD radiator and all will be fine. also yes your tranny will bolt right up- im using a 5 sp myslef. but it IS NOT to be abused. no power shifting, no clutch drops, no funny business b/c by swapping in the multiplies your toque! :)

Also if you want more room you could also buy a Gen 2 rad support, hood, grill, and headlights.

PS the fenders are the same.
