First I’d like to say I’m not trying to slam Dodge. But!!!!!! Though I love the looks of my truck 2001 quad cab 4X4. I’m finding it to be not very reliable. It not has 45K and has had all the following work. All 4 ball joints replaced TWICE, 1 new transfer case, 1 rear posi. and all 4 shocks. Please tell me this is not common. This is my first Dodge and I have been thinking about upsizing to a 1500 or 2500 ram. But I’m a little leery. Before any of you suggest I abuse this truck. I’ve only had it off road 4 or 5 times with my 5 year old and we were just putting along nothing crazy.

John,

I used to own a Dodge (96 1500 ex cab 4x) and I too for a long time questioned their reliability (and customer service, they're not too good at it). I swore I'd never go back, what a P.O.S. they built and delivered to me. It's been several years and only now am I considering going back to them for a second chance. I'd like to ask about the reliability and quality in the late 90's to early 2K models of the Dakota (club cab 4x), if anyone would like to provide their input. Looking for the good and bad of models during that time window. Thanks.

I had a 99 CC 5.2L 5spd 4X4 purchased new. during the 111,000 miles I owned it the only trouble I had was the headlight switch needed replacing, a bolt backed out on the driver side front brake caliper and required a new caliper and spindle, and the intake gaskets started leaking and needed replacing. All this was covered under warrenty. I finally had to have the brakes done at 104,000. The truck was used mostly for my 50 mile commute to work but did see limited off road use, no serious 4 wheeling. I will say that it did see hard use on the street. Due to the fact that it also had to play the role of hot rod, the engine, tranny, tires and brakes got a pretty good workout sometimes.

Dodge Dakota pickups are the cream of the crop when speaking in reference to less-than-full-size trucks. Within it's class, there is no match the combination of quality, comfort and styling of the Dakota. You will always hear of unsatisfied owners with all makes and models. They are also the ones who yell the loudest.

All vehicle makes have their lemon. Go buy anything and there is always a chance that it will suck. If you drive a new one and like it, buy it. Chances are you will not have problems like the last one, no matter what you buy.

I was just wondering if others were seeing the same problems? Or did I just draw the short straw. Also even though I know this is a Dakota page has anyone had experience with the 1500 and 2500’s? By the way I’m not yelling “anyone want a Dakota” I truly love the looks of my truck. I have it setup just the way I like. Leer cap, with Yakima railrider system, and bike racks. Nerf bars spray in bedliner. My truck looks sweet I’d post a pic. Buy it’s in the shop again. By the way all repairs have been though Dodge under warrantee. So it doesn’t cost me anything it’s just a big pain in the A$$.

John,

I am also about ready to pop for a 2500 RAM. After the first couple years of owning my 99 3.9 cc, I swore I would never by another dodge again, But, in the meantime the problems have lessened other than things that generally go bad over time anyway. I have heard people complain equally about their Chev's and Ford's so I figure it is a crap shoot as far as reliability. For me the trucks looks outway the fact that anothers brand may be SLIGHTLY less prone to problems then the one I choose.

One last thing, If I wanted a truck for large towing needs I would get the chevy. The allison transmissions are supposed to be very reliable while I know mutiple people who ahve had many problems with Fords and Dodges in past years anyways.

Well, I fell in love with dodge when they redesigned the dakota in 1997. In 1999, I was finally financially able to buy one. I special ordered it(SLT Plus, with heavy duty everything) from the Dealer in Altoona, PA (a run around with that place). 5 mos later they still didn't have it but they had one with everything I ordered plus an automatic transmission. I bought it and like I imagined everything I could want in a truck....except quad cab, 2000 was the first model for that. Seven weeks later when the valves started to rattle and the plugs were getting fouled out, I was quickly losing my love for my new truck. Upon taking it to the dealer I was informed that it was an engineering flaw. Long story short they retarded the timing, I lost some performance, fuel inefficiency, and traded it in, vowing to never buy a dodge/chrysler product again. It was an awesome truck for comfort, handling, braking, power, looks.....just typically bad dodge quality. I also worked for a company that had dodge dakotas for fleet fleet vehicles, we had a lot of transmissions replaced around 75k miles. Now I am ready to buy a new truck. I wonder if Daimler-Chrysler has improved quality? I may just get the new tundra double cab in November or the new colorodo

I just came up to 120k miles on my 2000.
Yes, there have been a few issues (head gaskets), but overall I am very satisfied with my truck.

I finally had to replace ball joints about 5000 miles ago. One fell apart during some serious offroading, really ruined the day.

No problems at all with tranny yet, which was the only thing I was a bit leery about when getting the truck.
