Subject: IAT sensor Relocation help
IP: Logged

Message:
I finally got a cold air intake (360 for those that care) and it comes preped for the IAT relocate.
I found what I thought was the IAT just to the drivers side of TB in the intake manifold.
So I dropped that in the intake and tried to start it. (hadn't plugged the hole yet.)
truck ran but at 2000 rpm, plugged the hole with my thumb, (lots of vaccume pressure) and truck died.
was that the map sensor that I moved? if so where the heck is the IAT?
right now I have a 1/4 plug in the air intake so all is good but I would like to relocate if possible.
If that was the IAT why did it die when I Plugged it? by the way this is a 2002 4.7 and there were no wires going to my airbox.

while I am asking, does anyone have install directions for the HO cams, have them at home and want to install this weekend.
I have read many posts and feel comfortable with the install, but I would like to have the torque specs. any help would be nice.
thanks in advance.

I think youre messing with the idle positioning sensor. there are 2 sensors on the driver side. one is the throttle positioning sensor the other is the idle sensor.

the IAT should stand for Incoming air temp Im not sure where that is located. I would thik its somewhere on the stock air intake tube

I know what the TPS looks like and it is on the throttle bodie. this fit in the 1/4" hole perfectly but like I said when I plugged the hole in the intake manifold just to the drivers side of the TB the truck died. there was a lot of vaccum pressure and it took a quarter turn to remove.
the piece I moved had a rubber O ring about a half inch up and seemed to fit perfectly.
My trial and error method did not work so well so before I break something I thought I would ask for help.
thanks for the reply though but I know it was not the TPS.

It wasn't the MAP sensor, that is on the front of the intake manifold. It sounds like you removed the correct sensor. Running the engine without the IAT sensor in place (and not plugged) would give you a vacuum leak. How did it run? I'm not sure why it would stall when you plugged it with your finger. Maybe the sudden change in manifold pressure, maybe the computer compensated for the leak by running it extra rich, then when you plugged the leak it drowned. I don't really know, but It sounds like you have the right sensor.

Thanks for the reply J.
I will switch them at lunch today and let you know.
I sounded pretty cool when it was running with the vaccum leak.
huge sucking sound!
I knew something wasn't right and I tried to give it a little throttle and it didn't want to respond right away.
I think your assesment of it running rich sounds right now that I think about it.

The IAT is just a temperature sensor. It looks like an O2 sensor when it's installed and has a thermistor(Looks like a disc capacitor) on the business end. It's located on the passenger side of the intake manifold on the 318, not sure where it is on the 4.7, but it is somewhere on the manifold. There is no reason the engine would die if you plug the hole.

well I tied to fix it at lunch, but the plug I have is too small for the intake manifold.
it fits perfectly in the air intake.
what exacly are you guys using to plug the old hole?
I went to home depot and bought a 1/4" brass plug.
others have said nipple but a nipple is threaded at both ends and would require a cap as well.
is that the solution?
