Subject: Mirror and door handle paint?
IP: Logged

Message:
I was wondering if anyone has painted the mirrors and door handles and has been happy with the out come? If so how long has it been? What type of paint did you use? I asked the dealership and they told me that they would not do it because it would chip off easy. The top of my front bumper is grey plastic and on the slt (I think) it is painted the body colour. They told me that it is different plastic than mine.

Thanks!

I manage a body shop. We wont paint textured plastic parts because the paint just doesnt adhere very well. When we've painted them in the past (mirrors, rocker mouldings, handles etc...) they usualy come back within a month or so with the paint chipping off. And if you try to sand the texture off of the plastic it just makes a fuzzy mess. Plastic parts that are smooth to begin with are easy to paint.

I painted my SLT bumpers and a year later.... no chips. You need to use a rough steel wool pad and score the textured surface evenly. Clean it off completely, and use Bestine to clean just prior to painting. Bestine a adhesive oil remover that will not damage the plastic, and will remove any grime that standard detergents can't remove. Go to a automotive finish shop, and get bumper coater, its not paint, its a plastic coater. Give at least 2 light coats and make sure that the surface is completely covered alond with the ends. This will bond firmly to the scored plastic and smooth out the texture slightly as well as adhere to the grooves the steel wool made. Follow up with automotive paint, spray can or painters gun will do. At least 3 coats. The textured surface should almost be gone now. Follow up with at least 2 coats of clear coat finish for a glossy look, and your bumper should be high gloss and smooth. Allow each coat of paint to dry under high heat spot lights, this expands the pouress surface of the plastic and keeps humidity from affecting the paints bond to the surface. Allow 2 days dry time before remounting and at least 2 weeks before exposing your bumpers to a power washer. You shouldn't have scratches for at least 2 years. Hope this helps... please email me for more answers if you have them. hitmeagain@comcast.net
