Subject: Drove an '02 AWD 4.7 QC..... IP: Logged
Message: Drove my friends truck last night. This is coming from a diehard 01 4.7 QC 5spd manual tranny owner.
It was NICE. We both have 355 gears. I thought that if he had 392 gears, then his first would be as low as mine with the 5spd.
Anyway, it was smooth, firm in the corners, no real body sway, I hardly noticed the auto! J/K
I really liked it, it would definitely be an alternative to my truck i would seriously consider.
And if he reads this, Rod, thanks again for the help with the HO intake manifold.

Message: The last four days I have been driving a 03 QC 4x with the 4.7 auto (rental while my Dakota was in the body shop) and I would agree, very nice truck. This wasn't loaded, low end am/fm cd, power windows, locks, tilt, cruise. I was impressed with the 4.7 and especially the auto trans, they have made considerable improvements since my 99, there were no out of the blue down shifts, or up shifts. Before I returned the truck I checked the option sticker in the glove box, it had listed the trans as a 5 speed auto, I guess I had not heard that Dodge had a 5 speed auto, anyway the trans was impressive, I believe I have the wife convinced of what her next vehicle (truck) will be.

Message: It's a 5-speed auto, but not in a conventional 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 way. It has two second gears and the computer decides which one to shift into depending on the situation.

Message: Well, not quite. In 2001 the 45RFE auto was renamed to 545RFE. At the same time the TCM software was modified to utilize an additional gear combination not previously used. The additional gear combo added a taller overdrive gear that is normally refered to as "OD2". So, the 545RFE has 6 forward gears. ONly five are used in a 1,2,3,4,5 fashion with the 6th being the alternate second gear being selected on downshifts under specific speed conditions.
All 45RFE tranies (from 1999 and 2000) can have the TCM flashed by the dealer to add the OD2 gear and effectively become 545RFE tranies.
There have also been lots of software improvements made, that have greatly improved shift quality and performance.
