Subject: A/C is cold then turns warm IP: Logged
Message: HEy guys mabye someone here can help me out, I have a 2000 Dakota 3.9 V6. I been having a problem with the A/C: Turn on the a/c and it works fine for a while then warm air will blow out the vents and compressor will not cycle. then it will start to blow cold again, sometimes in a couple of minutes sometimes longer. Took it to a a/c shop and they said the refg. level was good and it must be electrical. They replaced the electric fan and condenser and said it was o.k..
picked the truck up a/c was ice cold , then about 20 min. down the highway warm air again!!! any suggestions????

Message: Typical symptoms of freezing up to me. Maybe not enough refrigerent, but are you sure the level is correct?
Also, the high/low pressure switch could be faulty.

Message: Heres some more info i just noticed: if you start the truck and turn the a/c on, the compressor comes on and does not cycle, it just stays running, and the a/c is ice cold. if you let it run for about 10 min the turn the a/c switch off and then back on , the compressor will not turn back on. i checked the drain it it is draining o.k.. i dont know if this info will help..

Message: Fuzion01,
I have a 99 3.9 with the same problem cold/warm AC, although I have a clutch fan.
How do you tell when the compressor is cycling?
I thought I had fixed it a couple of weeks ago but now I am not sure. I bought a recharge kit( although pressure appeared okay) changed to a 180 stat and flushed the cooling system all in the same night. My AC is colder now, the truck runs cooler when moving thanks to the 180 stat. but when I am stopped for a short while the guage goes up to about 210 degrees and the AC gets warmer. My wifes chrysler has consistent cold air in this AZ heat, so their has to be something I can fix/replace. Let me know what you find out. Thanks.

Message: I am not sure as to the pressure switch protocol on these trucks. It sure sounds like a pressure switch gone awry, especially the latest description/symptom that you gave.
Boatanchor, I know your truck has a clutched fan on it....right? It could be suspect. What you are describing is an "airflow" issue at idle and slow speeds. YOur engine starts to heat up at idle and slow speeds, but cools right off when you get moving. Typical symptom!
Your wife's Chrysler has an electric fan that stays on all the time that the air is on. This is a very important difference whereas most electric fans will outperform most mechanical fan assemblies hands down in the CFM departments. 134 systems almost all need this constant high flow of air to produce airvent temperatures that are cold. I suggest you put a booster electric fan on the front. Easy to do.

Are you saying my clutch fan might be faulty? or is it just the design of those things. Also I am having other issues with rattles and squeaks when the AC is on, I think I have serpentine belt and/or tensioner pulley problems. I am not a mechanic, so I am wrong more than right when it comes to these things.
Yes my wifes 300m has an electric fan with great AC. I don't really understand yet the clutch fan and how it works. I know it spins real loud at start up.
I have heard of others replacing their clutch fan with an electric to reduce the load on the engine but I have heard mixed reviews about the cooling ability of the engine. As stated before, I live in AZ and we are getting 120 plus degrees days durung the summer on occasion, and I think I need the best cooling needs possible. The booster fan on the front of my 3.9 sounds like a good idea. Any recomendations? Thanks.
