Subject: electric fan +12V connection

Where do I hook up the +12 positive source for a Black Magic electric fan? Right now it's connected to the battery. I don't want it coming on when I turn off the ignition. Is there a place in the fuse box under the hood? alternator? any help would be appreciated.

u might be able to hook it up the same way your stereo is into your ignition wire so it only gets power to it while your key it turned to on or acc...

You will have to put an aux relay into the feed circuit from the battery with the signal coming from the ignition.

Do you have a relay now? Do you have a way to signal the fan to come on from a sensor?

Check this page out for a GENERAL idea of how to hook a big fan up! Go to http://www.geocities.com/smithmonte/Auto/MarkVIII_Fan.htm

General my ass!! I know all the relays and sensors are in there and hooked up correctly, I just don't know where to change the main power source to. It has to be able to handle a lot of current, like the battery. instructions say you can connect it to the alternator. hmm maybe I can plug it into my cigarette lighter ???

All fans with the type of current that you are pulling needs to come directly off the battery/battery buss. Not the fuse panel, not the alternator, not clipped into another circuit, but directly off the main battery or main buss.

I put alot of electric fans in hotrods and muscle cars. It's pretty easy really but I know it can be complicated to others. Here's my explanation in the most general way I can put it. YOu can use the diagram that I refered to for help. I will leave out the diodes.

First, the ground lead to the fan can go to any good ground you locate. The power lead from the fan should go thru a automotive relay to protect switches from the continuous current and especially the inductive current of over 60amps in-rush). Go to www.newark.com and order the VF7-41F11-S01 (12volt/70amp/mounting bracket...go to http://www.newark.com/product-details/text/CD121/60873.html for info). The lead should be protected by a 40amp auto breaker. PepBOYs usually has these. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PROFESSIONAL CRIMPER TO INSTALL LUGS AND WIRE ENDS OTHERWISE THE CURRENT WILL EVENUALLY EAT THEM UP!!! I usually crimp and solder the power leads. Now that you have the fan power installed thru the breaker thru the relay, it's time to determine the signal circuit that will turn on the relay/fan. The relay that you have purchased is just like the one in the diagram referenced above. It has terminals that are labeled 30 & 87, which are the large lugged ones for power leads, and the 86/85 terminals for signal (smaller lugs). You can hook the feed from the battery to either the 30 or 87 and the other to the fan. One of the 86 or 85 must be grounded. The left over terminal will be your signal terminal. Now there are several ways to hook this up depending on what you want. If you have only a manual switch and want the fan to run ONLY when the ignition is on then find a suitable "swictched" lead from the fuse box and route thru the switch to the signal terminal. This will allow you to run the fan ONLY when the ig power is on. If you have a tempertaure sensor only and depending on whether or not this is a two lead sensor (like a probe sensor that goes in the radiator itself) then take the ig "switched" signal lead to the probe and route the other to the relay signal lead. This will only run your fan when the ig is on and the temperature sendor calls for it.

If you have air too, this is more complicated. You will have to run a lead from the air compressor signal to the relay signal post with a diode in the lead. The diode prevents the airconditioner from being turned on by the other either temperature sensor or the manual switch.

HotRodSRJ -
Thanks, that's what I need to know, and I was hoping there's a spot somewhere under the hood (near the fuse box) to connect to - because that's about as far as the wire will reach. As I said, the fan is already hooked up and working just fine so all I have to do is switch that wire.
