Subject: Dealer Cant Find Front Pop IP: Logged
Message: I have had my truck at the dealership for 4 days now. They have rebuilt the entire front end of the truck, the steering column, plus some bushings, greased and tightened everything in the front end and they said that they cannot find out what the popping is coming from. They also used the TSB concernign the popping in the front end, and still no dice. Anybody have anything else in mind that this could be associated with? Thanks alot, and my truck is still at the dealership so I would love to be able to give them a heads up so they can wrap it up and I can have my truck back. Thanks
Jason

Message: I know they prob checked it, but a pop is usually a ball joint.

Message: I had my 2001 Quad popping/grunting, especially when turning left and going up on a curbing etc, but it turned out to be the steering rack. If they put the steering rack back in, the pops still there. I have had TWO steering rack replacements so far? Seems to be inherent to the situation.

Message: I also had a "pop" in my front end. The dealer said it was the front brake pads releasing, but I know what that sounds like and that was not it. I eventually found that the bolt in the drivers engine mount was coming out. Fortunately part of the steering column kept the bolt from falling completely out. Might want to check - if it happened to mine there may be others.

Message: Alright, check this out, wondering if anybody out there has had this problem, they found out today that the bell housing was loose and thats what was causing the pop. It took 4 full days at the dealership to find out that that was it. But, on the bright side, no more popping, and they went ahead and replaced everything in my front end in the process, so I got a brand new front end, and now no more popping. Pretty sweet for not paying a penny...

Message: I have a pop that comes from my right front tire when I am turing and hit a bump with that tire. The ball joints have all been replaced and still no-one can find the problems. I have just given up on it and will check it out more when I put my drop kit on..

Message: There's a thread somewhere that addressed a cab mount that "clunks" when making a sharp right turn on a bump. My 99 cc still does it.

Message: The pop is your upper control arm has gone bad...I bet you the pop is coming from the passenger side right?
Have them replace that and I bet that fixes the problem.

Message: This generation Dakota has always had the popping/steering problems. Also, the front sway bar needs to be checked every year or so (if you have a FSB)...

Message: Can someone tell me what a bell housing is and where it is located on my 02 3.9 cc?? I have the same popping noise and am tired of going to the dealer so I need to just tighten it myself.

Message: I have the same annoying popping sound coming from the right front of the truck. I took the truck in and they replaced all the sway bar bushings but the sound is still there. I asked them if it was the ball joints and apparently they looked fine. This was on a Friday and I think the monkey's were too lazy and wanted to get out of there instead of fix the problem. So it could be the upper ball joints, the steering rack, possibly a loose bell housing or even a cab mount? Did I mention that my rotors are warped in the front too? haha...

Aaron

Message: I have the same problem on my 00 4.7 4x4 sport dealer replaced steering rack and the problem is still there. I hear it when im making left and right turns especially when the wheel is cut all the way, could it just be parts rubbing together due to something being loose?

Message: The bell housing is what connects your motor to the tranny. Not sure how many bolts, but they said it was only one or two of mine that were loose and thats what fixed my popping noise...

Message: A popping or clunking sound when turning and going up an incline is usually just the steering stops rubbing against their stoppers, ( the stops prevent the wheel assembly from turning past a preset limit) Usually all you have to do is put some grease on the stoppers and the steering stops, some trucks ( my old nissan ) had plastic covers that press over the stops soo you wouldn't hear the noise when the 2 parts rubbed together.
The steering stops look just like bolts that mount on the spindle and the stoppers usually mount to the lower control arm, their should be a set in the front and rear of the front wheel, so when you turn full lock left or right they control the amount that each wheel can turn.
