Message: Well, I have never had a flat tire in my life! That's 37 years of driving without so much as a jack out of the trunk! Then it happened this week. A catastrophic failure of the Goodyear Eagle LSs at 80mph! Fortunately it was the rear and the 2001 QUAD took it like a champ....still steered over to the right side at 60mph+ throwing rubber, lot's of noise and bumpity bumpity going on! No problem I am glad to report, not even slap marks on the sides!
But, I was disappoited in the type of failure (sidewall) and since I travel so much at a time I had to go back with new tires for confidence at this early point. I have 32K on the truck now and figured I had 15K left!
I selected the Kumho EXSTA 255R65/15s, H rated from the tirerack. They were exact swaps and rated the highest for $84! I could not believe that a tire could make that truck any better handling, ride comfort and/or less noise, better wet and dry traction etc......but the Kumho did it! I highly recommend them for those of you looking for a stock swap/upgrade.

Message: Its funny how people think that rear blow outs are safer. Yet 4/5 Fatalities from flat tires are caused from rear blow outs.

Message: Hey HotRodSRJ! I just replaced my original Eagle LS's (at 42k miles) on my 01 QC with Kumho Ecsta STX 255/65/16s. You're right...what a difference! They seem to be much grippier in dry and wet conditions. Got 'em through tirerack.com, too. Regards, Steve

Message: sidewall failure is most often caused by running tires with low pressure at high speeds. One good habit to get into is to at the very least visually inspect all four everytime you fill up the tank.
That, of course, wont prevent one of the prevailent causes of such failures for experience motorists: picking up debris that causes a very slow leak (low pressure) and a subsequent blowout on the same day or trip.

Message: Nate......you have hit the nail on the head! Blowouts are attributed to underpressure and high speed ala the Ford vs Firestone fiasco! That's whats got me puzzled about the blowout. I check my tires everytime I wash the truck which was just the day before. I have calibrated tire gauges and I know that all tires were in the 35lb vicinity...at least then! Also, I a very observing individual with tires.
Your point about running over something earlier and developing a leak could be a the culprit, but I examined the tire the best I could for cuts and debris hoping to find something. Nada! Probably the case.
As a point of interest tho...I did think these tires looked like they were ten years old which was strange. They exhibited cracks along the sidewalls and between the treads that I thought excessive! This is what motivated me to a new set! Now I am wondering if a tire cleaner I use may be degrading the natural vehicle in the rubber itself? I use Greased Lightning (a very alyline cleaner) that always seems to remove this black film from the tire that essentially runs down the tire onto the pavement. It does a great job of removing anything from the tires and makes them black as coal. Could it be that this weakens the tire(s) over time? Anybody else have these suspicious cracks after 18 months and 30k miles?
