Message:
I have been leasing an R/T for the last three years and in bringing back the lease, the guys are demanding that the tires be of a tread depth of at least 1/8" (which the four are NOT). They want to put on NEW tires, but if I can find some used ones that are good enough, that is OK too! Anyone thinking of getting new tires? What to get rid of the 'old' ones???? 255/55/17 of course!

Thanks..

Chris

I'd consider it. I'm thinking about some Nittos anyway. Where are you located? I'm in Maryland, and have 4000 miles on my 2000 RT. How much can you afford?

BTW: Happy July 4th to all the American friends out there!!

I have about 500 Canadian skins to play with. That provided has to get me the tires here and on the truck. That makes it about 375 American Greenbacks that has to include shipping and getting them on the truck. I dont know for sure about shipping but I figure $60 for mounting and balancing. I cant say for sure, but all I need is some crap tread that passes inspection on the lease return.

is it in writting that the tires need that much tread or is it just the dealer being a jerk.? If it is not in the lease paperes tell him to go to ????. Every lease I have ever signed (3) had nothing in it about tire condition. Has the guy never heard about normal wear and tear? I'll bet he demands that every trade in have a lot of tread depth too! The last lease I had, there was a $100 walk away clause in it, at any time durring the lease period, weather the lease was up or not, I could drive it to the dealer and for $100 leave it on his door step, no questions asked, as long as it was in good condition for the milage. If I were you I would drop it off at the dealer and tell him "Don't like it? Sue me!" It will cost him far more in lawyer fees and court costs then it is worth, Plus it would not hurt to check with your State's Attorney General Office consumer protection Division to see what's up either. Do not take this lying down!!!! Shooot man I just checked with a mechanic and he says most tires are good and safe to drive on with 3/32 tread left, so go tell the clown to take a flying leap! Unless the is a clause in the lease that says different.

slopehead, shut up moron.

The poster is in Canada, a fact you would know if any of his writing had penetrated the cement in your head. Try finding a "State's Attorney General Office consumer protection Division" anywhere in Canada.

Chris, are you getting another vehicle from the dealer? If you are they'll generally eat the cost of certifying the returned vehicle. If not, you're legally obligated to. It's in CFC's lease agreements available online here Chrysler Financial Canada. Don't take dickhead's advice or you'll end up in a very expensive legal holywar that will make the price of 4 tires seem like chump change.

Try a used tire shop. I have literally 50-75 of them where I live. Unless you're out in BFN, you should have good luck close to home.

I forgot how much fun it was posting on the site here. (haven't been for awhile) TOO funny MR. HANKY!!

YES, I am up in Canada, home of hockey and igloos..... wait a minuite, I've never seen an igloo!!. I am actually only a stones through from Port Angeles (across the water on Vancouver Island). Port Angeles is near Seattle.

I have tried phoning some local tire dealers, but none have the size that I need.

Here's the deal with Chrysler Financial Canada (CFC here after): They have in the lease agreememt a return policy which I could return the truck at any time for a few dollars. Either then or at the termination of the lease, there is a vehicle inspection done (ALL leases have this). All of the major manufactures have become qutie harsh on the lease returns as they are getting the cars and trucks out the door for right near cost, so they are covering their back end of the lease. IN the agreement, there is all sorts of min. requirements that the truck has to meet. IE: windshield damage, paint quality, clicks on the odometer, TIRE WEAR, etc. The tire requirement is that it have 4/32 or 1/8 tread left to "pass". Mine have 2/32 left on 4 out of 5 tires. I also "failed" on a few paint areas and not having a front liscence plate bracket (I have since found it in my garage because they wanted $61 for a new one). I must say that this is ALL to do with CFC and not my local dealer. The guys at my Dodge dealer are doing EVERYTHING they can to help me out. They are detailing the truck to try and polish out the few scratches that might not pass at CFC. They will give me dealer cost for 4 new tires (still works out to be $750). They are also taking out the K&N air filter system (paid like $600 for it) and putting in the stock one that I have so I can sell the K&N one (anyone want one??!!.. trade for some POC tires!!!!!) I told the guys at Dodge that I thought that it was a brutal way of doing business because I planned on possibly getting a family vechile from them (Grand Caravan or some other MPV), but that had absolutly NO bearing on the lease that I had with the R/T!! Can you believe it?? I guess that it is more of a cut-throat business now than I thought it was.
My only options are to continue leasing the truck (three year contract is up and I can lease month by month), but I already have a new Astro for my work (Cable Guy ~ Canadian chapter!!), and I don't exactly have an extra $500 a month for a truck for fun!! I can also buy out the truck, but it was like $20000 ($14,937.64)which is right near what it is worth, and I don't want to try and sell it (anyone wanna buy a truck?).
Basically I just want out of the lease as cheap as possible, even if that means OVERPAYING for some crap used tires (HAVE to be 255/55/17). As long as I can get "passable" tread on this thing for cheaper than getting "new" ones, I am winning, and CFC is losing. What I really hate is that if I end up getting new tires on the truck, the only one that wins is CFC. I am basically setting up someone elses truck for resale, so really, I want to get the 'used' ones on the truck, just to spite!

OK, Enough for now..
Questions? Concerns? Comments????

I NEED TIRES!!!! ARRRGH!!

BTW: I Get to keep the "slicks" (2/32) that someone could use for racing!!! wanna trade???

I've leased 3 vehicles here in the U.S. since '96, and each one of them has specifically stated in the lease agreement that the tires had to have at least 1/8" of tread left on them when the vehicle was turned in. I also could not get out of the lease early unless the remainder of the lease was paid off, or I sold the vehicle and paid off the lease, in addition to an early termination fee. So, if someone was able to "walk away" from the lease at anytime, with only $100 penalty, I'd like to know where they got that lease, because I want one. The last lease that I had included a $250 turn in fee at lease end, just to cover the cost of cleanup and disposing of the vehicle at auction. I thought I'd be smart and buy the truck, so I wouldn't have to pay the turn in fee, then sell it. How hard could it be to sell a clean, low mileage pickup? Took me ten months of payments to get rid of the thing for $500 less than what I owed on it. Won't do THAT again.

About Slopehead.

I've been chasing him around here for a while now. All his posts are stupid and he is uninformed. I agree "slopehead proving once again that he's an ignorant moron".

Here is what I wrote about him on another thread:

Slopehead, is the "slope" from radical brain surgery? Are you missing something in your cranium?

If ________ ______ (fill in the blanks) were left up to you, we would still be in the dark ages ... but I guess with a name like "slopehead " your IQ is right there with the caveman anyway. Can everyone spell lobotomy?
