Subject: 5.2 stumble on cold start? IP: Logged
Message: Anyone else experience this problem?
If I park my truck overnight and start it in the morning the engine will kinda sluggishly come to life, almost as though each individual cylinder takes a while to start firing correctly untill eventually, (after about 5 or so seconds), my idle sorta smooths out.
BUT, even after that it feels like I have maybe one cylinder that takes its time waking up, If i put the truck in gear and gently let it idle slowly foreward you can feel a dead spot in the engines idle (consistent with a maybe a possible misfire?) but when the engine is fully warmed you can barely detect anything and the engine seems to smooth out.
Im also thinking I have lifter noise on startup as I can hear a ticking/tapping souind coming from the right cylinder head area during warm-up that continues even after fully warmed, sounds like lifter noise, but new lifters 2000 miles ago DID NOT fix the noise....
The dist. cap and rotor have been swapped with a new NAPA brass setup, Spark plugs have changed to Autolite Platinums, and all wires have been replaced, but this changed nothing.
any ideas? Im currently in the process of moving and have no acess to my tools but as soon as I get into my new house I plan to run a compression test on the engine and see what Im dealing with.
OH,,and its also a LOW mileage engine 1999 Dak with 19,055 miles as of this afternoon.
To say Im discouraged is an understatement!
any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Message: Sounds to me like it needs to be driven. I would not be surprised if you have some deposits on injectors and/or intake valves due to lack of use. Put some miles on it, run some injector cleaner in it. Maybe even try fuel conditioner if you keep the tank full without putting many miles on it, how long has some of that fuel been in there?
NOTE FOR ALL: Big misconception....low mileage is NOT always a good thing.

Message: When you changed plugs, did you happen to install # 3923's ? I have them in my truck and on cooler to cold mornings mine does the same thing (stumble).

Message: Changing the cap, rotor, wires and plugs can do wonders for curing misfires too.
Buy a good set of wires from Jegs or Summit. Taylor wires cost about the same as the stock replacements.

Message: Jason B where do you come up with the BS , there is absolutly nothing wrong with a low milage vehicle, as long as they are properly maintained like all vehicles and driven ocasionly low milage is a good thing !

Message: Sorry DUH, did not realize that my statement could be misconstrued like that.
Let me make it clear that I meant to say "not always" instead of "never". Oh wait, thats what I did say. Not always meant, not in every case or circumstance. So what's at issue here? As a matter of fact, you made my point even more clear by clarifying the circumstances that are not included in "not always a good thing". Thank you, your help is appreciated.

Message: Your post about low milage not always a good thing was in direct response to ANDE's statment that his Dak has 19,000 miles, in which you imply that is a bad thing, or at least that since he has low miles that he doesn't maintain his vehicle. The only point I helped clarify is that you are full of BS. I have a brother that thinks like you, if it is not running right you need injector cleaner. Maybe you should have added: NOTE FOR ALL:Big Misconception average milage is Not always a good thing. By the way I have, besides my Dak a 87 Buick GN with 21,000 miles, it averages less than 1500 miles a year and to this day runs as good as the day I brought it home.

Message: DUH, you have taught me a lesson. Next time, I will either keep any mere suggestions to myself, OR explain ALL possible scenarios so as not leave any stone unturned.
