I got a chance to drive my pals 1998 SLT EXT 318 with the Vortec a bit ago. Its a good runner. Power is strong (as you can imagine) but the best part is the noise's this thing makes. The tire spinning, the blower whine, and the blow off valve whoosh all are music to listen to. He has headers, a reflashed computer, Kat box, relocated sensor, LTD slip, upgraded auto trans, etc. All in a package that looks "stock" to the masses. No outside clues to what is lurking under the skin. Great truck.
It dynoed at 290 HP @ the wheels on 8 PSI boost. This next month we are going to slip the built 360 back in (the 360 dynoed at 380 @ the wheels) then I want to take it for another spin (yup, he has two engines).
I also upgraded my pals 1995 V8 Sport/SLT EXT with a 3 inch Mopar Perf. cat back kit last week. He wanted a dual outlet kit, but after reading up on the single 3 inch (& the performance gains) we went w/ the single out - sewer pipe look.
It sounds excellent. At idle its pretty tame (his wife likes that), but ON the pipe & deep into the carpet with the throttle this thing sounds like a full blown race-truck.
He kept the converter in place. I guess if he wants more rumble at idle he could always try a straight pipe there. Sounds good as is tho'. We also did the "S-bolt" upgrade on the throttle body at the same time.
He tells me that now with those two upgrades that the truck will bark second gear (automatic) most everytime he pulls away from a stop.
Ya gotta like that.
Now to improve my V6...

Message: Nice work, where did he get his mopar exhaust system from? how much was it?
I got ceative last night and made a cold air intake by removing the rubber flap next to the radiator, taking off the elbow, putting a length of 4 inch adjustable aluminum ducting from the front of the airbox to the hole next to the radiator. and i dropped in a k&n. it makes a nice whoosh sound now when i step on it. not sure if i gained anything other then the sweet sound, but letting the engine breath better couldnt have hurt. next step is exhaust, but i still dont know if i want duals, single, what brand, etc.
good luck with ur v6.
PS what size threaded steel is that S bolt? i might go get some at the hardware store tonight, do i just vise it down and bend it to shape then?

The Mopar Performance big pipe was direct from Mopar (commonly known as Positive Performance, Mike Leach Enterprises makes them out in California). Normal retail is $295. Nice piece.
S bolt is a 5 minute job. I think I have done half a dozen for friends now that I have found out about it.
Take a 4 inch piece (I found longer than 4 is not needed) of 1/4 x 20 and bend it back at a 35 degree angle or so a inch & 1/2 up from bottom. Then make another bend (the other way) a inch & a 1/2 down from the top. It kinda looks like an "S" when your done.
Use your stock piece as a pattern if you want.
Easy. Takes longer to take out the factory air blocking plate & bolts then it does to make a new replacement!

Message: Ok, this may be a dumb question, bit what is so great about an "s" bolt. I know what it is and were it goes, but what advantages are there.
Also has anyone toyed with removing the metal frame from the stock air hat?

Message: Intense,
Well, the stock "bolt system" that holds the air hat in place has a rather large "base" that is right smack dab in the way of the air flow into the throttle body. Looking at it I would say that the placement of this "base" is restrictive enough to be a horsepower robbing part.
By what I have seen on the Internet, removing this obstruction will allow gains of 5 HP @ the wheels according to the Dyno Jet dyno.
I tried it on my V6 and can tell you that I now have a different sound as the air rushes into the throttle body (perhaps the air going around the threaded rod I used to replace the factory piece?). That alone indicates to me that something with the airflow has changed (or maybe a left a wrench in there!).
All of the V8's I have done the "S" bolt with seem to have responded well to this easy upgrade also.
I have not tried to mess with the stock air hat, but you can bet I will look it over soon.
