Subject: Whining Case? IP: Logged
Message:
I have a whining noise that seemed to be coming from the transfer case on my '97 Dakota 4x4. The noise is speed sensitive. So I bought the rebuild kit for the case and put it in, but it didn't fix the noise. So I thought it would be in the rear end. So I bought a new ring and pinion kit and replaced all that last night and it is still making the same noise. Anyone ever have any similar problems that this reminds you of? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Message: Try the CV joint for the front driveshaft. On my 83 W-150 it used to whine like crazy in 4 wheel drive and always did. When I rebuilt the engine, I took the whole driveline apart and greased that CV joint, then noticed the whine was gone. It came back eventually. This truck went 192,000 with the whine so it didn't affect durability. As a sidenote, I would not recommend trying to rebuild CV joint by yourself. Get a driveshaft place to do it

Message: I forgot to mention that this whining noise is happening while in 2wd. Haven't checked to see if it happens while in 4wd.

Message: Try giving it more compliments. That usually stops my wife's whining.
