The R/T has been around since the 1968 Charger and Coronet. Plymouth used the advertising campain "rapid transit" and Dodge used "scat pack" they never mande a plymouth R/T so I'd say that it doesn't stand for Rapid Transit.

Dan he was not looking for an expression of opinion he was looking for fact and I really think that someone working in the place where mopars are built knows a bit more then the others who are obviously too young to know the history of mopar and yes I too get a little bent when people bend the "facts" to suite their own little mistaken agenda. My first mopar was a '70 Fury 3 383 4 bbl. and I have had 7 other mopars since then. I buoght it right after I got out of Uncle Sam's Army. So yes I am old enough to remember as I was part of the last days of true muscle cars. Redbone got it not quite right. And I am LMAO at him.

I had a '65 Belevedere II with 383/4 sp./lsd that I bought before I went in the Army so I should know everything, but I don't because I'm old and my memory is gone. I'm sorry about the run on sentence. It won't happen again.
PS. It's not my fault. It was something that I took in the '60s.

We don't see alot of KP anymore, except in the field. Seems, like many positions, civilians are cheaper labor than Joe.

Redbone, I said Dodge called their performance cars R/T's starting with the 1968 Charger and Coronet. However, Dodge did use the term 'scatpack' in their ads and plymouth used 'rapid transit' look at the lower link I posted above and check out the old posters. I'm not trying to be a smartass or anything, I wasn't positive either so I went and looked it up in some of my Hot Rod magazines from 1970 and then found a link to a scan on the web. There is a lot of confusion about many other things that were different in marketing from the Dodges and Plymouths. Like Dodge called the 3-2 bbl carb setup a 'six-pac' but Plymouth used 'six-barrel'. All those high impact colors had a different name depending on weather it was a Dodge or Plymouth, everybody calls the purple 'plum crazy' but technically if it's a Plymouth it should be called 'in violet'. I have always been a bigger Plymouth fan then a Dodge fan so I got to know the Plymouth specifics much better over the years, especially the 68-71 B bodies.

Dodge used Scatpack package on the Superbees and Challengers it was a rearend,tranny package.Plymouth built 7 concept cars that were called the Rapid Transit.Someone is trying to buy up all 7 of the Rapid Transit cars.Now that would be a dream collection to have.

Technically in 1970 plymouth referred to the Cuda, Roadrunner, 340 Duster, Sport Fury, and the GTX as rapid transit cars. So any of those cars could be considered part of the Rapid transit system. There was a RTS caravan that toured the country in 1970 and 1971 that had 4 concept cars (or modifided production cars) form each year for a total of 8 cars. These are the cars mentioned above. It is directly from Dodge concerning the Dakota R/T and I quote, "R/T-it means Road/Track-has been used by Dodge since the 50's to mark performance oriented production, pre-production, or concept vehicles."
Redbone scan in that owners manual and lets see what it says, maybe Dodge has changed their mind since 1969. The 1999 book seems pretty clear to me.
