Message: Hi, i'm 19 and I just bought a 2000 Dakota Quad Cab w/ the 4.7 V8. I just have to say, WOW!!!! I had a 94 explorer before, and I absolutley love this truck!! I've had it for about a week now, and I've noticed that once in a while, when i get home from work(about a 20 minute drive)and I step outside of the truck, I smell brakes. It smells like i drove it with the parking brake on. But I didn't!! Anyone have any idea what it could be? Oh, bty, it has 43k mi on it. Thank you.

Message: Either you have brand new brake pads and they are bedding in ( mine is doing it now cause i jsut put new pads and rotors on it)
or
Youre braking very heavily from high speeds or youre braking at the last minute for a stop light or turn so youre heating up the pads.

Message: I don't think that I am braking too heavily, I'm used to driving trucks, I've driving full size broncos, Silverados, and Sequoas before. Is there any way to tell if the brakes are new?

Message: Look at them....the thickness that is. The only way to really know would be to compare it with brand new break pads.

Message: It is also possible that you may have a caliper sticking. Is your odor coming from more than one wheel? If so, probably not a caliper, but you never know.

Message: Yeah the brake burning smells just like a clutch burning.
If you have a stick shift it may be the clutch.
if you have new pads the material would be really thick about 1/2 inch thick possibly almost 3/4 inch thick. You may have a sticking caliper. does it feel like the truck is slowing down faster than normal

Message: No, not really. I didn't smell it at all today. Hopefully it was just the brakes. Oh, by the way, does anyone have a link to a page with good instructions on a do-it-yourself intake? I tried looking but didn't find a step by step. Thanks

Message: I know this is an old thread but I have a terrible brake burning smell periodically. I changed the front pads and rotors on my 02 3.9 CC about a month ago and they originally smelled while breaking in. They were fine for a while but now once and awhile they will smell terribly. Last when it happened the truck seemed to pull to one side while breaking. Is this indicative of a sticking caliper? Is there anything that can be done short of changing the calipers? Thx guy's. great forum.

Message: AJ - you could have a sticking caliper; probably the side you were pulling toward. Side with sticking caliper will have a wheel that's hotter to the touch.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Yep. After a drive, feel the wheels near the hub to see which one feels hottest. From experience, DO NOT touch the rotors with your fingers. Very hot. Very.

Message: Thx Guy's. Crazy thing is itss intermittent and seemed to occur after I changed the pads and rotors. Was wondering if a few drops of oil between the caliper housing and piston may help?

Message: No. You risk having that oil creep onto the braking surfaces. There is, or should be, a rubber sealing boot around the piston where it exits the caliper. The boot tends to collect brake dust. Get as much brake dust off the caliper, boot and piston as you can. Also, make sure the guide pins are not rusted. Any surface the pads slide on (anywhere the pads contact the caliper) should be kept clean, and on those surfaces, a small, repeat *small* bit of the proper grease (usually lithium based) is OK.
Don't use oil-based greases, like axle or bearing grease. The oil will leach out and start to spread at typical brake temperatures.
