Subject: Problem w/ fuel filter?? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys and gals, I'm new to this site and thought I would throw something out there. I have a 2000 QuadCab w/ 4.7L auto. Recently, I have been having trouble starting the engine, whether it is hot or cold. The engine turns no problem, but it usually takes three tries before it fires up. Now I turn the key from OFF to ON about 2 or 3 times to prime the engine before starting, and that usually does the trick. Unfortunately, I think I'm gonna wear out my lock cylinder prematurely.
Any thoughts?

Message: Is your fuel pump relay sticking?? When you trun the key on, but not start the engine, you shodul hear the fuel pump turn on and presurize the fuel rails. If you don't hear this then your truck won't start due to no fuel in fuel rails. If it takes 2-3 key on cycles for truck to start, I woudl tend to think maybe the fuel pump isn't turning on right away.

Message: Whenever I turn the key to the ON position, I can hear the pump priming the engine. Also, when the engine does start, it runs fine; no stalling or sputtering. This leads me to believe that maybe it isn't the fuel filter(sock) at all. For some reason though, the gas is running back down to the tank every time I turn off the engine. Is there a vacuum line or something that might be leaking, causing this to happen?

Message: I had the same problem with my 1995 318. The truck won't start cold or hot, but priming by turning the key on would work fine. The truck ran fine once started. The dealer told me it was the fuel pressure regulater. It turns out it was the fuel pump. There is a valve that closes when you shut your truck off, in order to keep the gas in the line. So your fuel pump now has to now reprime the whole fuel system in order to start the engine.

Message: Thanks steviek, that does make a lot of sense to me. I'm no 'motorhead', but there definitely is some logic there. So, was the final outcome to replace the fuel pump? And is there a maintenance precaution that I can take to avoid this in the future? (i.e. additives, better pump, etc.) I had to replace the fuel pump in the gas tank a couple of times on an older Suburban, but do you think this is something for a Service Shop to perform? I appreciate the posts, thanks.

Message: Do not replace the fuel pump when this happens. Ask first if there is a bleed-back repair kit available for the pump first. For most of the 1999 and 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokees, there is a kit available, not so sure about other DC lines. BUT, I would ask first. The kit for the Jeeps is only $12.95 DC list price.

Message: Well, I stopped by my local Dodge Service center & tried to pick their brains. It turns out, although there is a "sealing ring" repair kit for 99-01 Jeeps, there is NOT such a kit for the Dodge line of 4.7L engines/fuel pumps. Oh well, it was a longshot. Now, since it appears I have to replace the fuel pump, are there any suggestions on who to purchase from? I have seen pumps sold separately and w/sending unit. Are there actual separate pumps or do I have to buy the whole enchilada? Also, does anybody think it would be possible to install a check valve outside of the gas tank that might serve to keep the fuel from running back into the tank? Just a thought. Thanks

Message: I wasn't talking about modifying the RETURN line. If the sealing ring on the pump has gone bad, then whenever I turn off the engine, the fuel which normally stays in the SUPPLY line is draining backwards into the tank. Theoretically, if a check valve of some sort was installed on the SUPPLY line just after it left the tank, maybe it would prevent the fuel from running backwards into the tank. I could understand if you didn't comprehend the question, but sarcasm certainly doesn't help matters. If modifications to the fuel system are a bad idea, then try explaining the reason why, so maybe all of us could be "ones who know".

Message: There is a check valve already in the fuel pump assembly on the 4.7s. I have had the same problem. After speaking with several dodge techs, they all have stated that this is a common problem and the only fix is to replace the pump assembly (350-400 in parts). I just had mine done about 2 months ago. It now starts like it is new again
