Subject: Third n 1/2 Gear? IP: Logged
Message: Hi all...
I'm new to the Mopar scene... Just got my first Dodge, a 1992 Dakota w/ 5.2L and Automatic Tranny. My question... When I'm on the Highway I get first gear...second gear...third gear...then it gets strange. It's almost like it goes to fourth gear, and then it drops about 250 (not 2500) RPM...
It does the same thing when I get on the gas. I'm in Overdrive (fourth?)... I press on the gas, and... It drops down to 3 and a half gear, and then down to third... then the same as I let up on the gas...down to fourth...and then down just a bit more...
Is this normal?
Please help!
Thanks.

Message: Ok, Ok... how about someone who has some advice and not just a smart-ass comment.
I'm not a gear head and I wouldn't have asked the question if I wasn't serious... I don't know what converter lockup is... Sorry, but I'm not Mr. Goodwrench... or Mr. Mopar... or whatever...
If anyone can simply answer my first question, it would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!

Message: It's a lock converter. It is made to lock up when crusing. All late model cars and trucks have them.. It's a economy thing. Drops RPM for better fuel milage.

Something you might want to try is buying yourself a factory service manual, I found mine on Ebay for 35.00, but even if you have to go to the dealer it is money well spent.
You will find a section dedicated to every system on your vehicle, so when you are bored or have a problem you can do some reading. You will be amazed how much information you will be able to find. At the begining of each section there is a explanation of the system in that section, in most cases it will answer a lot of your questions. PAFP!

I wasn't refering to your post as being smart-ass... sorry! The first reply was!
I guess I should have been more clear about my level of knowledge ...(next to none...)
I'm planning on getting a service manual, but I need to get an owner's manual first...
Thnks!
