Subject: R/T front bumper for 2003 sport?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys, I'm tired of the grey sport bumper on the front of my '03 4.7, and I want to put on a color matched (black, FYI) front bumper like the R/T has -- any leads on where I can get one? I've heard the '03 front bumpers are a little different than other years -- is that right, or will any '01-'03 cover work? And no, I don't dig any of the aftermarket valances -- I just want the stock R/T look.

Thanks

my 97 black sport dakota has the color matched front bumper from the factory. u must have been too cheap to order it as an option. why dont u just wait till premier auto comes out with their carbon fiber front bumper that is a exact OEM looking bumper but wieghs 60 pounds less which is good for our nose heavy trucks. BY THE WAY, IF YOURS IS GREY PLASTIC, WHY THE HELL WOULD U HAVE TO CHANGE FOR A DIFF BUMPER? ITS CALLED PAINT, TAKE IT OFF, GO TO A BODY SHOP, PAY ABOUT 100 BUCKS AND HAVE A BLACK BUMPER -(kota on 2Os)

Nice try, tough guy. I do not have a '97 dakota sport. I have a 2003 dakota sport. '97 dakota sports have smooth painted upper bumper trim. '03 dakota sports have a grey textured upper bumper trim that can not be simply painted over by a body shop for $100. Does anyone else out there (who knows what they're talking about) have any leads on getting a factory-style R/T-type front bumper (smooth, paintable) that will fit my '03? If premier automotive (Elite Customs) is really coming out with a carbon fiber one that doesn't look ricer, then I will wait for it.

thanks again

Just get the one you have painted. Have the paint shop primer and paint it and it will smooth out. As far as the '97 SPorts, or any year sport up to '00, the very top part of the bumper was painted black and was metal. In '01, they switched to a full polyurethane bumper cover, the only difference that the R/T has is the whole bumper cover is painted.

NavyDak: are you referring to the Stampede ground effects on the late 2003 R/T's? The kit lists for around $2000. My guess is the air dam price is way up there.

Your best bet would be to go to a Daimler-Chrysler parts counter and have them lookup the front bumper part number for a 2001-2002 R/T. I'm not sure if they come color matched but that's probably your best bet. The most popular model of aftermarket bumper for the Dakota covers the factory bumper instead of replacing it, so there isn't many spare R/T front covers lying around.

Ooooo!! $2000 for Stampede ground effects. For that price I would go for the Stillen or SS bumper covers. I got everything done (bought, painted and installed) for less than $500. Maybe you could just purchase the R/T front bumper cover with Stampede ground effects only.

I went to the dealer a couple of weeks ago looking to buy the front bumper just like the one on an r/t for my 02 slt+. I was almost blown away when they said it would be around 500 bucks just for the upper and lower parts and they do not come painted from the factory anymore if you order them through the parts counter. So..add another 100 for paint and the final price is just insane!! I still want one though.

baksdak,

For an '02, you can get a paintable bumper and valance on eBay for about $115

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33640&item=2420114002

But for the 2003, the bumper is a one-piece deal, and the parts guys tell me it's interchangeable only with '03 and '04 models. My problem is that a new mopar '03 R/T single-piece front bumper goes for about $350, while an '02 bumper and valance set would only cost me about $115. I just don't know if the '02 bumper and valance will mount up to my '03. Does anybody out there know?

The newer one piece front fascia use fog lights that have a different housing than previous years. Also, a steel reinforcement bar is needed in combination with this fascia. This is what was replaced on my 2000 Sport.

If you're in no hurry, I'm sure you can find someone with a black R/T swappping out his OEM fascia with an aftermarket one.

Strange, I took my front bumper Facia Cover off and hit it with 240 grit to bring it down (get the bumps off of it), then used 400 grit on it and took it to a body shop and had it painted. It looks just like the bottom part, smooth and all. I also had my roll pan painted at the same time, total cost of painting both $120.

Here is a pic of it

So all you need to do is some labor, and have a repitable body shop paint it.

Later,

Lynn
