Subject: Thinking of buying a Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking of buying a Dakota and I have several questions.
I have read that the paint jobs on all Dakotas up through the early
90's have problems peeling away in time. What year exactly did Dodge
correct this problem?
Also; what was the first year Rear-wheel Anti-lock (ABS) brakes
become STANDARD? Or have they ever been STANDARD?
What is the code that denotes that limited slip differential and ABS
is added and where would I look to find this code (on late-model GM
vechicles it is on a decal on the inside door of the glove box, I am
not familiar with decoding MOPAR vehicle codes nor where to look)?
Also; is the Multi-port Fuel injection/intake system (MFI) the same
today as it was 10 years ago, or has Dodge upgraded and made minor
modifications to this system since then? As far as I can tell, it is
the same system that first appeared on Dakotas way back in '92 but
I'm not sure.
Any help provided would be greatly appreciated.

Message: Don't do it! I have come to realize that Daks are ugly and don't hold their value worth a damn! Get a Lightning or a Harley, just do a serch on here and see how many Dak owners have dumped them and gotten a Lightning or a Harley, and remember what your search comes up with is just people on this board getting out of Dodge, and these are die hard Dodge guys. Just imagine others that are not blinded by silly brand loyalty, they buy what is worth thier dollars. If it wasn't for brand loyalty Dodge wouln't be selling even the little that they sell! Dodge isn't interested in giving real performance value, if you want performance you either have to get a SRT Neon, WHO WANTS A NEON! Or a high dollar Viper or RAM SRT. Dodge sucks, who cares if they have the fastest car or truck if you can't get one. Get somthing attainable from Ford or even a Vett.

Message: Nothing really holds its value anymore! Ford !! If it wasnt for the Lightning what would they have! Oh ya a 260hp full size slug. They are so far behind in the power scene on there stock trucks its pathetic. They dont even come close to Dodge in base engine power hell even chev has more balls with the 4.8 base engine. And dont even bother mentioning the stang because they are like an a$$hole everyone has one! And Beekota you are not old enough for anyone to give you a hemi to test drive, if you have ever driven ANY truck before you wouldnt say the hemi didnt impress you ,there is no comparison!

Message: Scott, I purchased a 93 regular cab dak in 95. The paint on the roof starting having problems, but the rest of the paint was fine. I had the 3.9L and it was one of the best trucks I have had. In fact my dad is now the owner of it, and it is still going strong. When purchased, it had 33,433 miles on it. Now it has 134,000. During that time, the water pump went at 116,000 and the fuel pump went at 125,000 (that probably had something to do with the fact I didn't know there was a filter in the gas tank), I had the rotors turned once then replaced sometime after 100,000.
Also when I purchased the truck (it was $11000), all my friends went out and bought brand new Ford rangers for about the same price. But it was great sitting at the stop light with a V6 and auto, knowing all they had was a 4-banger and 5-speed. There were also several small sports cars that I would take off the line. It was fun to drive. I drove it hard, and it still hung in there. Even towed a trailer w/car on it. My dad uses it to tow his 24ft jon boat.
All the good experiences I had with my dak is why I sold it too my dad and traded the ex-wifes car in for a 2002 4.7L club cab dak sport. I don't regret it one bit.
Hopefully you find what you are looking for. As for me I'm stickin' with my '02 dak sport and my '70 + '72 dart swinger.

Message: I have 2 Daks both purchased new 97 RC and 01 motorsport RC. The 97 has 120,000 miles on it, only problems were front bumper paint peeled and plug wire. Other than these problems never been back to dealer. 01 only has 5000 miles on it. I have owned all brands of trucks, good and bad in all. I have a 94 Chevy 3/4 ton truck at work that has over 400,000 miles on it. Regular maintenance will prolong the life of any truck or auto. Drive what you like and if it feels good do it. I just like the looks of the Dodge, plus have been a Mopar nut for life.

Message: I wouldn't be too concerned with resale value - nothing is holding up too well in the resale area because the market is flooded with vehicles. Buy what you like whatever it is. The newer trucks are all good products.I just purchased my 01 Dak in Feb and love it. Before that i had a pair of s-10's and both of them were good trucks too. It's all about your personal tastes and brand loyalty if you have any...If you do buy a new Dak keep in mind that the restyled ones roll out in about 6 months. If you are really concerned about resale it would be worth waiting.

Message: Scott,
If you are interested in a Dak I have an '02 Quad Cab, 3.9L V6 with tons of options. IT is silver exterior and dark gray interior. I love the truck, looks awesome and runs great (especially with the mods I have put on). Trouble is I also have a boat and the V6 just doesn't have enough balls for me to tow with. Some say it should work great and it does get the job done, but it does not have much balls with a 3000lb + boat/trailer behind it. IF you are just using it for standard p/u stuff or even jet ski's you will love it.
Let me know if you are interested. ONly 17,500 miles.

Message: no vehicle holds its value unless it costs 50K or more. your average vehicle doesnt hold value worth a squat. lightnings seem to but then they only make so many of them.
I had some problems with my dakota ( 2000 SLT 4x4)
I had the front axle break ( recall) and the rear axle brake mounting plate break off. It was all fixed. I havent had any other problems with it except the brake rotors seem to be crap, but I just replaced the pads and rotors with Raybestos parts this last weekend and they seem to work great. cost me abotu 140$. the shocks seem to be getting old but they are the stockers with 48 000 miles on them so no biggie they need replacing. One thing Im not happy with is the gas mileage, 13-14 MPG average,
overall I dont have a problem with it as far as fit and finish. its still as quiet as it was when it was brand new. As for purchasing one again I dont know. there are a few trucks out there that I like a lot so im 50 50 on it. i do like that its almost a full size ( feels liek it) but doesnt have the drawbacks of a full size

Message: Don't do it man. I bought a brand new 03 CC 4.7L and it's been back to the dealership several times already. First, the check engine light came on as I was leaving the dealership! They had to replace the computer. Now, a month and a half later, I have a puddle of water on the passenger side floorboard. Back to the dealership next week for more repairs. It doesn't have 2K on it yet. Stick with Chevy or Toyota.

Message: NONSENSE! I have a 2003 Dakota and love it! In my opinion it doesn't matter if you go Dodge, Chevy, or Ford there will be some rotten apples in every barrel. Someone buying a truck and having a problem that results in him/her having to take it back to the dealer for repair does not mean that every Dodge will have the same problem. It is also not proof that a Chevy or Ford would have been a better choice. I have no clue if the resale value of my truck is less than other models. After making the decision to spend that much of my hard earned money, it had to please me, not the next person if I ever decide to sell it. If you are trying to make good investments don't buy vehicles, because that is one thing that they are not! Buy what makes you happy, it is really that simple.

Message: Well, why is it that you can do a search on this forum for "wet floorboard" and find hundreds of posts? Obviously, this is a recurring problem with Dodge and they can't/won't fix it during manufacture.
