re: new '03 Dakota club cab sport plus 4x4 4.7L 3200mi.

In reguards to fuel consumption, the overhead console will show that I have 0.0 miles left, but my 22gallon tank only takes 17.5 gallons (topped off). Which means that there would be ~4.5 gallons left. This equates to 1/5 of a tank, 65 miles, or about 1 hour of freeway driving. This seems to be a rather large discrepency to me. Is it just me or are other people experiencing this same issue? Should I beat up my local service dept to fix it or is it just this way? (Other vehicles I have driven with this feature, typically have only ~1 gallon left when they display 0.0 miles left)

I apologize if this is a repeated question, but I could not find any other links in the recent message boards here reguarding this subject.

Thanks,
THC_Smoker

#1...Yes it is a problem to be taken up with a dealer.

#2...Never beat up your dealer, you will one day regret it when you need help.

The service person suggested that I run a few tanks though it to see if it corrected itself. My local dealer's service dept tends to try to blow things off as "thats the way it is". They still have not agreed to do anything about the substandard seam seals on the bed. They have been passing me between sales and service with no solutions. basically, I got "drops" of sealant underneath the paint in the bed and places with "streaks" where the sealant was spread up the wall or along the bottom of the bed. It looks crappy and chips off easily showing bare metal. I am probably going to get a Line-X or Rhino liner... but now its a matter of principle, I just want them to admit its substandard application and fix it... You pay 10's of thousands of dollars, order the truck you want, patiently wait for it only to have substandard assembly work performed and the dealer tells you "they are all like that", but when you look on their lot, you cant find a bed that looks as bad as the one you got. Its not really the dealers fault, its the factory, but as I understand it, the factory does not have a service center to take your vehicle back to ;) (just kidding) I'll probably take it to an alternate dealer and see what they say (its all warranty work)

(rant over)
sorry about that, thanks for the confirmation! I dont intend to physically pummel my local service department, just call them on their words. As my grandma would say "you catch more flies with sugar than vinegar"... matter of fact, i feel that I am too nice to them as it is. I let them tell me things that I know are not right, take it at face value and then get screwed because of it. oh well, live and learn.

My overhead console does the same thing. I blow it off and dont really worry about it.

I read somewhere on this board that the reason it reads 0.0 and we only fill 17.5 gallons is the fuel pump is inside the gas tank and uses the fuel to cool it.

stuarth is dead on. You should never run your tank dry or you stand a good chance of burning out your fuel pump.

Thanks for the responses guys. Some observations: 4.5 gallons of fuel/coolant sitting in my fuel pump? Wouldn't the fuel cool it just by virtue of passing through it? If thats the case, shouldn't they be advertising it as a 17 gallon fuel tank. This is quite a bit of gas to be unaccounted for in my humble opinion.... used as a coolant for the fuel pump or not.

The reason for this is because as stated, the fuel in the tank helps cool the fuel pump. By running the tank low, when you accelerate the gas sloshes to the back of the tank and away from the pump. The more fuel in the tank, the less chance of the pump sucking air instead of fuel. Also, it's kinda like the idiot lights on the dash, it's too keep stupid people from running their tanks empty and getting stranded because the tank wasn't empty at the last gas station. I'm suprised you didn't complain about the low fuel light coming on just under 1/4 tank of gas. Don't complain to the dealer because there is nothing they can do about it. If you feel it is a problem, take it up with DC. But it's a common thing that most new cars that have the fuel consuption computers do.

I believe the fuel "pickup and filter" are in the tank. The fuel pump I think is under the bed on the drivers side.

On older and some newer GM vehicles to pump is in the tank, and it is lubricated by the fuel, not cooled. (It doesnt seem right to cool something with gas).

I am not an expert, only my opinion. But I am almost possitive that only the fuel pickup and filter are in the tank, along with the obvious stuff.

The fuel pump is in the tank. As far as Ian and running your tank to empty, you are just asking for trouble, and as fatr as I know, all Dak's come with 22 not 20 gallon fuel tanks.

I don't have the fuel 'ESTIMATOR' anyway. When it's low, I stop for gas.

I dont intend to run my tank out of gas... I though that was the idea of having a gauge... that uh... works accurately. Again, lets do some math here....

22 gallon (tank size)
minus 17.5 (max fuel from pump)
equals 4.5 gallons (left in the tank).

This simple equation that tells me that my gas gauge is inaccurate towards the positive direction. This equates to about an hour of freeway driving (65.5mi).. this is quite some distance IMHO for my guage being dead-on "E" and my estimate miles left at "0.0". I can understand 1 gallon left maybe, but not 4.5. Of course the *only* way for me to verify or prove this would be drive until it ran out of gas, something I dont intend to do or feel I need to do in order to get my dealer to adjust/fix it.

Thanks to all for your input on this!

I agree with THC_smoker. Maybe it isn't that big of a deal, and it certainly won't cause any problems, but i'm sure he paid well over TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS for his truck. I bought mine in 02 with 3 miles on it. I expect the thing to run and operate nothing short of perfectly for at least 7 years or 70,000 miles. That is one of the reason i chose a dodge. If there is a problem no matter how small or insignificant it should be fixed. That is of course if it is covered under the warranty still. If my new $200.00 cordless drill doesn't work, Home Depot gives me a brand new replacement no questions asked. If my $2.00 gallon of milk is sour when i get it home, Albertson's will give me a gallon for free. If my $25,000.00 vehicle is making a weird noise, or behaving odd in any manner i want it fixed, or give me a new one.

jeremy spoke up
in class today.

There is nothing wrong with dope heads truck. It's working perfectly fine. Id Dodge doesn't engineer in some "Fukcing Idiot Proofing" into their vehicles, then every fukcing idiot who let the tank go bone dry would eventually come back for a new fuel pump every 2 weeks and biatch up a storm.

Like hmmmmyea said, your thong is wet over nothing.

Dodge fuel gauges say empty even though there is 5 gallons in the tank so pot smoking fukctards won't crawl into the dealer every three days for a new fuel pump, mee-an.

So your comlaining because you have gas left when the guage reads E?? Have you ever looked at your tank from under the truck?? If there was only 1 gallon left in the tank, it would barely cover 1" in the bottom of the tank. Not real easy for the fuel pump to pick up gas with that little in the tank. Especially with bumpy roads and going around corners. Take a step back and think for once. If there was only 1 gallon left in the tank when your guage hit E, you'd have a hard time getting to the gas station due to the fuel sloshing in the tank and not being picked up by the fuel pump, and causing the fuel pump to work harder and get hot from no fuel flowing through it, and causing it to wear out quicker. Woudl you rather change your fuel pump once a year(required dropping the fuel tank) or only be able to get 17 gallons into your tank when the guage reads E?? If you know you can still drive for an hour after the guage hits E, then do it once and see what happens. You said yourself you have no intentions of running it till it dies to figure it out, so I guess Dodge did you a favor by telling you the tank was empty when there was actually 4 gallons of gas left so you didn't run out of gas before you got to the gas station.
What a friggen moron.

Well, after having to argue with my local dealership and putting up with their snide comments and crazy looks on multiple occaisions, they ran an option report on my vehicle and found that for some reason, the factory installed a 20 gallon tank. I am not crazy after all! (tell me something I dont know) The window sticker and all my paperwork says that I bought a truck with a 22 gallon tank. My dealership is now working with chrysler to remedy this.

To those of you on this board that supplied useful/helpful information, I wholeheartedly thank you!

To those of you that treated me like a retard earlier in this thread...Please keep your mouths shut going forward unless you have something positive to contribute.

Thanks guys, have a great holiday weekend!

Regardless of how big your tank is or how accurate your gauge is it is never a good idea to run your vehicle that low on fuel.
1. The fuel pump is in the tank and cooled & lubed by gas.
2. Any water or dirt that gets into your tank eventually ends up in the bottom( yea I know it gets sloshed around when you drive) but you stand greater chance of having problems if you consistently run tank that low.
3. The more fuel you keep in your tank when vehicle is parked the less condensation can form in your tank and add water to your fuel.
Need I go on....
Have a safe and trouble free holiday weekend.
