Subject: AWD NV244HD Transfer Case IP: Logged
Message: Where on the NET (Chrysler Customer service # is busy and my dealer appears to know nothing about this) can I find technical information on how my AWD NV244HD Transfer Case works (ex: constant 60/40 torque split, only 1 wheel drive sending torque to the wheel(s) with least traction, etc)
The past ten years I've driven only AWD or 4WD vehicles, I'd like to know exactly how my DAKs AWD system works and get some real world exerience to back up the 'white paper' info, so I know the systems limitations, how to adjust my driving style, and know when I'd better be in 4WD HI in order not to get stuck.
Thanks...

Message: I will be taking delivery of a Dakota in a few days that is equipped with the same system. I know it is not as good as the Jeep GC system which sends power to the wheels with traction but is better in low traction (rain, gravel, etc) than 2 wheel drive. Under very slippery conditions you will need to "lock" the transfer case to assure power to front and rear at the same time. I ordered mine that way becuse it provides safer hiway operation. New Venture has some information at their web site about T cases(http://www.newventuregear.com/tcases.html). I look forward to also hearing about real world experiences.

The NVG web site doesn't even list our NV244HD Transfer Case. I may call their tech folks later.
I have quite the interesting thread going on at Edmunds re: the NV244HD...I'm being told this system offers less traction than 2WD, is really 1 wheel drive, yet eats up tires and gas more than 2WD...hence my desire to get the white paper technical facts...plus I believe the folks discussing the above at Edmunds, don't own nor drive a DAK with the NV244HD (you can have all the engineering and white boards facts but I want real world experience to back those facts up)
I'd like to verify if two, three or all 4 wheels lose the same amount of traction, they will get equal amounts of torque applied to regain traction
or, if I wheel loses traction, by getting all torque applied to that wheel, it should be possible to regain traction...
I do believe we aren't full time split torque of say 60 Rear/40 Front like other AWD systems.

Message: Good thread FM18. I think you and Goto have it right. As I recall MACE the NV folks indicated that the NV 242 was equivalent. I did forget to mention that. As for fuel economy, the Jeep GC with AWD (they call it Quad Drive)that my wife drives (4.7 engine) gets similar fuel economy to what has been mentioned in these forums. The Jeep is several hundred pounds heavier than the Dakota CC also. She has been averaging 16 mpg in city stop and go. Highway is low 20's depending on how much of a hurry she is in.

Man, this is the best traction I've ever had.
Even w/ stock tires it's INCREDIBLE in the rain!
(they're not so great in the mud pits, though...)
mebee it's the 5.9, but I've never felt a lack of power to the ground in an on/off-road experiance -upgrading to 2500, john

Message: Anyone out there w extended ownership of all-wheel drive(Dakota)in rural conditions? Heard anything on breakin transfer cases as result of different sixe tire-(1/4" due to tread depth from spare tire after flat)? Current issue w my local dealership/repairs. Left a 12"+ split in housing. Theory is tire size difference engages 4wd system on highway. Anyone hear of similar issues?

Message: You need to take that above your dealer if you have warranty issues. There is no way a 1/4" tire size broke your AWD unit. That unit simply applyes power wherever it senses resistance. Tire size is irrelevent.

Message: Have an '03 with the AWD, I live in Northern BC Canada. Love it! I run 245/75R16's, but for some reason the spare was a 265. I had to use it once waaayyy out in the bush while hunting, no cell service. I was worried about the rear diff mainly. But that was 2 years ago, and using the larger tire for about 200 kms has caused no problems whatsoever. The predicament I am in now is that my local Dodge dealer cannot find me a brand new 2003. If they could find me one I would buy it. That's how much I love my truck.
