Subject: Fifth wheel ? IP: Logged
Message: Just upgraded to a 24 1/2' fifth wheel camper. I know technically I should use a sliding head hitch for a short box truck to get the cab clearance on tight turns but I got a free fixed head hitch with the camper and figure I can cut 80 degrees before contact. Is this likely to be enough or do I really need the other style ? Doesn't seem like I ever had to cut that much with my old tag along trailer; don't have any fifth wheel experience.

Message: Is it possible to just mount the hitch a bit further back in the box?

Message: They recomend mounting directly over the axle for good handling. I could get within 10 degrees from square to the trailer with it mounted there, wondering if I really need to be able to cut that tight.

Message: I think that if you are aware of the problem and plan on being the only person towing it with your truck then go for it. You seem to have enough common sense to not do any damage while backing it up or turning corners.
