Subject: transmission oil cooler IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone out there installed an aftermarket trans oil cooler on a 4.7/45RFE? I plan on doing some towing with my dak, and I want to add some extra cooling. My truck didn't come with the towing package. If anyone has installed one, have you had any problems in the winter/cold weather with the torque converter not locking up due to the fact that the fluid doesn't get warm enough to allow the computer to lockup the torque converter. As it is without the aux cooler (in the winter) it may take 5 min for the fluid to warm up enough for the torque converter to lockup. It really hurts the gas milage. Any advice or solutions would be appreciated.

Message: I also don't have a 4.7, but do have a 2002 V6 with the 42RE tranny. I installed a B&M cooler on my truck at about 800 miles, about a year ago. Since then, no problems, hot or cold. I live in Missouri, and it can get cold here, even though the winters haven't been too bad lately. I haven't noticed any problems with the cooler affecting the tranny during warmup. I have noticed that even on warm days, after having driven the truck in stop and go traffic, I can pull the stick out, and the fluid is just warm.
With the tendency for Dodge trannies to have trouble, someone told me that the best thing to do for them is to keep them cool and the fluid clean. That's why I put the cooler on so soon. Couldn't hurt yours, I wouldn't think.

Message: Thanks for the replies, but 42RE is a different animal than the 45RFE. The 42RE isn't totaly controled by a computer like the 45rfe. The 45RFE is the only tranny that is affected by the cold that I know of (it doesn't let the torque convertor lock up until the fluid reaches a certain temp). Any one else out there with the 4.7/45RFE have any input.
