Hello all. i just bought a 2000 dakota about a month ago. 4.7V8, ext cab, and is a 4x4. its having a bit of a cooling problem. people tell me its cause of the heat in arizona and its a V8 but i think its more than that. everything sounds like its working good. i'd like to see the orange pin on the temp gauge stay below 210 degrees, but it tends to sit right on the 210 mark even a little higher at times. the only time it doesn't hit 210 or hotter is when i'm moving (more than 35mph) and driving like an old lady. it gets a bit hot when i play with the gas a little. any suggestions would be great. sorry so long.

I experienced the same this this past weekend while on the "Truckin magazine" state to state run from Socal to Vegas. I have a 180 t-stat and a black magic fan in my 99 5.2. It hovered at 210 without the a/c on. I suspect an old radiator cap. Everything else in the system is within 15000 mile fresh.

Today, cars are made to run at "the optimum temp range" for efficiency. Cars need to be gas friendly, environment/emissions friendly, and the manufactures have found that right around your range is the correct level for all of those perimeters.
Most all Chrysler products run right around 210 in factory trim right off the showroom floor (My Grand Cherokee did, and even a pals Viper coupe does).
You can reduce the range, but as is, it is just acting as designed.
