Message: I have a mechanic friend who does quite a bit of welding. He has.... I believe its called a mig (feeds wire through a hose). He uses it for body work, and exaust work. but for frame and such thick, or structural things he has in the pasted borrowed a friends welder. It has sticks, and you attack one electric lead to the metal you will be welding, and hold the stick with the other lead.
I hope this helps some, as for brands all I know is the people I know that weld outta their garages really like the sears products.

Message: I could only look at the lowes page. I would get the first one because it has a higher amp rating for welding at max.
its better to get a higher rated welder in case you start welding heavy guage steel you get better penetration. I have a small welder ( cambell housefield and its ok for light welding. I paid 250$ for it. i wish i could buy a better welder cause sometimes there is stuff I cant weld cause it wont be strong enough.
There are techniques for welding. youll learn as you go but one thing I can suggest is PRACTICE on pieces of steel. what you want is to make the welder spark sound liek bacon sizzling with no interruptions. one thing you can do is as you weld keep the weld hot and push into the bubble of weld so as youre welding you are pushing into the weld as youre going down the line youre welding this is how you get the nice flat style welding liek this (((((((((((((((((((((((((((
you can also go side to side for wider welds
but you need to practice.

Message: NEVER buy a welder from a building supply store, go find yourself a welding supply store and deal with them.
Welding supply stores that sell brands such as Miller, Lincoln, Victor, Smith, Etc. will be able to provide you with higher quality equipment and free advice and information at about the same price.
You should not have any problem finding someone to help you set up your machine and showing you how to properly use it.
I completed a welding course at a local Technical College and this training has served me well.

Message: Lincoln welders that you buy at Home Depot have NO Regulator (for shielding gas), A pitiful excuse for a welding helment (I think that it is hand-held), No Gloves, etc, etc.
I purchased a welder from a welding supply company and got ALL high quality components Plus, A whole lot more for a measly $80 price difference.
In fact ... I actually saved money due to the fact that my welder came with a regulator and a much larger spool of wire. Plus, I had the choice of flux core or solid wire.
Home Depot and Lowe's Can't even come close!

Message: Like they said above, Go to a Welding supply store, A Miller "Bobcat 225" Is about the best Gas powered Arc Welder running. I have run the 3,000+ hrs before we had any major problems.
Dr. D Hit the nail on the head. Go to a welding course or "Volunteer" some time at a welding shop or spend some time as a welders helper to learn the basics before you go out spending $600-$2,400+
Do some research, here are a few sites of the most popular and versatile brands:
http://www.millerwelds.com
http://www.lincolnelectric.com
http://www.hobartwelders.com
These are the "Chevy, Ford and Mopar's" of the welding industry.
Like anything else, You get what you pay for.... If you plan on just welding mufflers together get the $400 one @ Lowes or Home Depot. If you plan on welding anything heavier like Bumpers.... Better get a Heavy Duty MIG or Stick Welding Machine.
Good Luck,
Shank
