Subject: Towing and 2002 QC Questions/Options IP: Logged
Message: Looking at getting a 4.7 V8, multi-sp auto, 2WD QuadCab :) and just had some
questions:
I've got a 16.5 foot boat that weights just under 2,000lbs fully rigged/loaded for
reference and often tow around 600 miles round trip each weekend in Florida (no
hills, but F*ing hot!). Current vehicle is '96 Ranger Splash Extra Cab with the
4.0l V6, 4 sp auto, 2WD and it's nearly dead at the 90K mark :(
1) Anyone got MPG numbers while towing?
2) Which options should I get? Of course the towing package, but should I get the
3.92 Axle? and the Anti-Spin rear Diff? The Tire and Handling Package is a must
have I assume.
3) What does the HD Service Group include? From the package list it appears to
include the HD Cooling package w/ auto tranny, is this true? Do you get an oil
cooler or just the tranny & steering cooler?
4) What are the differences in the 2002 models? Just color options?
5) The only difference I can see between the Sport and SLT models is that cruise
and AC are included in the later (plus optional two tone paint? Bright
white/silver would match my boat/trailer nicely :D ) am I correct here?
Sorry for so many questions, but I rather ask you guys that the stupid sales-hole
who sells Caravans and Neons all day and has no clue about trucks/towing. I've
been reading some old posts and have already learn a bunch of stu

Message: My opinion :
GET THE 3.92'S. I don't tow squat, and I wish I had 'em.
Anti-spin won't hurt, but I don't see it being completely neccessary for towing.
Get the handling pkg... you'll be glad you did.
Next opinion.....

The 3.92's are great for towing. You'll probably want the anti-spin too if you ever encounter some of Florida's slicker boat ramps(part of the reason I'm 4X4).

Message: johnc - my Ranger has never slipped... but you never know. The 4WD is just too
costly and adds too much weight for the ONE time I might need it. If I'm in that
much trouble I'll get on the cell phone for help.
Anyone with more info (especially the HD items) fire away... my wife has had it
with the repairs on the Ranger

Message: First of all I would definatley get the 3.92 gears as well as the limited slip. The gear change doesn't hurt mileage too much and could really help in towing. On the ramp you will also need the limited slip. These are only a couple hundred dollars different from factory and will really benefit your needs (I know because I tow a 4500 lb. boat). The HD service group includes a larger batt, alt, trans cooler and oil cooler. I'm not sure about the power steering cooler though. Besides, you should only need this if off-roading.

Message: All the Dakotas have a power steering cooler already tucked up by the water pump. If you tow, you will definitely benefit from the tranny cooler and HD group. Get the 3.92 also and if money is there, the anti-spin diff.

Message: Sounds like all the options on my 01 QC 2wd with the 4.7/auto setup. I haven't towed anything with it so I can't help there but I do have most the options. Heavy Duty service group will give you the 750 Amp battery, Bigger engine radiator and tranny cooler. I got the Sport Plus Group which included the Tire and Handling, A/C, 136 amp Alternator and Fog lights. I also got the 3.92 gears with the" anti-spin differential ". I believe the Sport Plus group also gives you the color matched grill and black bumpers. Not to sure, I ordered it as a Sport any way.
My 16X8 rims came wrapped in p255/65R16 Goodyear Eagle LS rubber and if my figures are right they equal out to about 29X10ish in Flotation measurements. If your gonna see wet boat ramps, make sure you get the limited slip. I seem to be able to spin 'em way too easy when it's wet. They hook up pretty good when it's dry though. Rear Sway Bar helps quite a bit in the corners too.
I may be wrong but I think there are interior options that aren't standard on the Sport trim like the Deluxe Convenience (Cruise and Tilt Column) and the Power Convenience (Power windows, locks, power mirrors and Keyless Entry).

Message: I got a 4.7 manual with the hd group.
I pulled a 22 foot cheroke hard sided trailer to Lake Mead over easter. It pulled it just fine. Killed the gas mialage tho like I thought. I ave. 9.5 mph. I of course towed in 4th the entire way. Did not have a problem. Some of the hill slowed me down to 45. Damn that is all. I thought some of the hills from Salt Lake City to Vegas would really kill me. The virgin River gorge slowed me down to 50 on one steep climb. that is it. I was really impressed. I out ran my bro with a ford 460 towing a 24 foot open bow boat. Granted the boat is a lot heaver prob 15-2000 lbs. I stilled out towed him with my little truck. HEHEHEHE
my 2 cents
