Message: Has anyone had to replace the intermediate steering shaft? If so, did you use the factory replacement? If you used an after market shaft, what brand did you use? I found mine going bad, causing a clunk in the steering and would like to know what brand to use as a replacement. Thanks for your help.

Message: Deep, I had a clunk in mine, and I found that the U-joint wasn't tight. one of the caps wasn't pressed in all the way(from the factory). I took the shaft off and pressed the caps in tighter(making sure it moved freely yet). I took about an hour to fix and has been quiet for about two months now.
Something you might want to check out before you buy a new shaft.
If you have any ?'s you can mail me

Message: I'm afraid it's the shaft. I put some bearing shim material down between the slide joint and the noise almost completely stoped. Boregson makes shafts for the Ram trucks, but doesn't list any for the Dakota. I feel the factory shaft may not be the best replacement, so I was asking about to see if anyone found a aftermarket shaft. Thanks for your reply though.

Message: 197,000 miles on my 98 Dakota, replaced the tie rod ends, front shocks, both wheel bearing hub assemblies (what a soaking that was), replaced upper and lower ball joints (with MOOG of course)and the entire rack and pinion, bought new tires, had it aligned, and wouldn't you know... it's the F&^$ing intermediate shaft in the steering column, dealer price out the door $244.89, can I find this damn thing cheaper??
I really can't complain, I bought the truck new and this is the first major problems it has given me... of course, it's paid for now... ha

Message: i had a clunk a while back, dealer lubed my tie rods and my steering stops, noise gone. but they still told me my steering intermediate shaft "has some play in it" and should be replaced.
i dont feel or hear anything wrong with the steering, so i'm not sure why I should fix it. (covered under my extended warranty with my $100 deductible)
they've lied to me in the past, but i'd hate to go to another dealer and pay $35 for a second opinion that has the same conclusion.
how can I check this myself?
thanks
