Subject: Dodge not releasing part info? IP: Logged
Message: I know many will think this is trivial, which to some extents it is, but there is also an important point which many may not know.
This is my third year owning a 2000 Dodge Dakato QC 4.7L with 45RFE transmission.
Not too many complaints so far, warped brake rotors, wrong K&N from AutoZone, dealer did a fender stratch-up job when replacing the faulty original battery, starting to a get a slightly rough idle as many on the forum mention (when A.C. is off), get that rare kick in the ass when the transmission downshifts to a stop and then you start to go again (also many others have complained about). Now trying to start searching for the damn 255/65-15 tires only Pirrelli seems to make now (does Goodyear anymore?) How can you get a deal when only one or two companies make them? I guess I'll have to take out a loan to get tires before winter. Hell I'd better order them now, maybe they will be off of back-order by November.
But this is the third year which I will drop the transmission pan and replace the fluid and hopefully the filters? (two of them?) this time.
What is annoying is that I have been told that many autoparts stores do not get the correct info or no info from Chrysler. Right now I can't get the correct transmission filters from Autozone, Carquest, O'Rielly, Advance, Napa, Parts Plus (don't have a Pep Boys here), same last year and the year before.
Come on, this is a stinking filter (or two) and these are national parts stores. Carquest has the right one under a Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee, but not the 2nd spin-on filter. They have never heard of 2 transmission filters.
The Dodge dealer has both and just told me they don't have to give out that information to these other companies.
Next I'll only be able to get my tires, oil, and gas from Chrysler dealers, at ultra-inflated prices, at their mercy and time-schedules?
I don't care if I pay $10 more at Autozone than online. I don't want to have to go to the dealer for a stinking filter (or for anything for that matter, they are all smug a-holes) or drop the pan for the 3rd time and bitch the rest of the day because I don't have the right filters and just put it back together again. I guess you would call it a complaint about convenience.
Maybe more of us need to complain. What happened to the old days of driving a mile to the local parts store and getting everything you need at a fair price? The parts store is still there, they just don't have any parts.

Message: I can get the filters at the dealer. I called tonight $20.17 for spin on, $25.41 for the regular one (includes o-ring seal).
I just resent the fact that I have to go to them for a transmission filter that has been out since 99? The same place that scratched up my fender when installing a battery.
If you call most any of the stores I mentioned, they will try to sell you the wrong filter from the V-6 42 series transmission or something, or they don't have it. They all should, look how many Jeep G.C., Durangos, Dakotas, and now Rams use this 45RFE transmission, every Autozone should have it in a second.
I could see this for a special part, but not basic parts, fluids, etc.
I could probably take the old one off and cross-reference, but I usually have to get the right parts first, otherwise I have to put it back together to go to work the next Monday. It is difficult getting parts late Sat. and Sun.
The whole point to my post is that I shouldn't have to do these things, I was told be a guy at Carquest that Dodge is purposely doing these things, and then Dodge dealer didn't deny it. In fact he was fairly smug about it. Why should I buy from him?

Message: Thanks to all.
Jeremiah,
I replied to you in the other post. Like I said just took a look at my 2000 owner manual and it said ATF+3.
What exactly is ATF+4 vs. ATF+3. I've heard many opinions, does anybody know for sure? I don't feel like paying an outrageous price for +4 and having to buy more stuff from the dealer (cause nobody else will have it), when +3 is fine, especially changing it every year.
I checked my wife's new 2003 Stratus manual and it says ATF+4, even for the power steering fluid, where mine says not to use transmission fluid for power steering.
Why is this stuff so complicated? Can't they just stay with one way, so I don't have to buy 2 or 3 different kinds of fluid for the same thing.
Let's see this car takes ATF+3, this one ATF+4, this car takes DOT3 brake fluid, this dirt bike says DOT4 brake fluid, this lawnmower takes 10W-30, this car 5W-30, this dirt bike 10W-40, this dirt bike 20W-50. I think I need a bigger garage with more shelves for oil and stuff.

Message: I have nothing against Amsoil. I just like stuff to be available, matter of convenience. I'm also not convinced of extended drain intervals, even as low as 5000 miles on engine oil.
Can I buy it at Wal-Mart? No. So if I was on vacation and was running a little low, practically I'd be SOL.
Can I buy ATF+4 at Wal-mart? No. (by the way my power steering fluid was just a little low, no problem fluid at Wal-Mart any time of the day or night, now where is that damn Chrysler dealer, in this foreign state at 2 a.m. in the morning?)
What is the real deal here? IS Chrysler trying to corner the market or is ATF+4 really needed? Funny my 2000 owners manual says ATF+3, guess if something goes wrong I could sue them.
Funny, I guess I've been away for a while, but I've never heard anything about ATF+4 until I got to this forum. Chrylser didn't send me a letter saying to switch to ATF+4.
It must not be that important. I'm sticking to regular Valvoline engine oil every 2000-2500 miles and Valvoline ATF+3 with filters every year (25,000 miles). It has worked for 3 years just fine, I'm sure it will work for 10.
In the wife's Stratus, yes ATF+4, but there it says not to touch the transmission for at least 100,000 miles (by then it may be readily available at $2 a quart). I think that is what the true advantage of the +4 is, extended drain intervals.

Message: This is another topic that I know just enough about to be dangerous. ATF+4 is a semi-synthetic fluid and an improvement over the previous fluids. Those of us who suffered thru the 90's fwd cars and bad automatic transmissions has led to the evolution of this fluid. I am under the impression that even this new fluid should be changed about every 50K miles in the fwd cars. ATF+4 is better than the previous fluids and makes a good replacement for the + and +3 type. Amsoil is the only non-dealer source for atf that meets the spec and should be better by being fully synthetic. I’m sure someone is refining it for Chrysler and when their proprietary lock expires it should be available aftermarket. Now on to the aftermarket. Usually, the companies have to obtain and test a new product before they can retail it, sometimes buying it from the same O.E. supplier. (Some parts are contracted from multiple suppliers and not everyone is the lowest bidder). The problem with today's auto parts stores are in any large community is they would like to out build their competitors and still have little inventory to actually sell. They can't comprehend that I have off work, or worse yet my truck is broken today, and I want to fix it today! Another ongoing issue is the fact that they stock parts based on the manufacturer with the highest build volumes. In the 1980's I had the occasion to question Advance Auto's upper management on this issue and you know what, that small block chevy intake manifold is still there gathering dust on their store shelves and I still don't own one. I'm sure the import explosion is giving these stores heartburn to see who can out exhaust kazoo the other one. It is like pulling teeth to convince anyone to stock a large quantity of parts to repair Chrysler vehicles. The one advantage has been that the basis for these pushrod engines evolved in the late 60's and very little changed. On a final note, stores that supply the repair industry can cross-reference the number and most manufacturers have service phone numbers for the latest numbers not listed. A good counterperson should check these for you .

Message: Mark, I agree, but here (7 miles from Ram and Caravan assembly plant and heavy union presence in St. Louis), there are plenty of American and Dodge vehicles.
The part stores are simply failing us. Autozone is nothing but a plastic junk accessory store for the rice burners, from Pep Boys ads they are probably the same.
Our only hope is the old-line stores NAPA, Carquest wise up and start agressively getting the right info and parts.
I think I will return the Carquest filter and get it online (bulkpart.com, thanks to Jeremiah). A transmission kit for the 45RFE should have both filters, especially for $27. It should be that I tell them the vehicle and then get the parts, 15 second transaction, no research, x-referencing, calling 20 stores, getting a wise-ass dealer guy on the phone, etc.
I intend to show Carquest as they didn't know there were 2 filters, maybe they can get their act together and I'll have a reliable, local source for parts.
I tend to ramble, but it burns my ass, the more I think about it. I'd better get off the subject as it is time for the weekend.

Message: Your welcome jp, you can thank this site and people who post intelligent and informed posts here. I am just repeating what I have learned on this site. Despite all the flames and the "do a search" stuff this site has all the info you need about Dakotas. I have not found a better one. Spend half the time you are wasting at part stores and dealerships researching here and you will know what you need and where to get it.

Message: I go through this crap ALL THE TIME with the few parts I've tried to get for my 2003 Dakota and the many parts I need continuously for my woman's 1998 Chrysler Cirrus. That car keeps breaking suspension parts (motor mounts, steering components, etc) faster than I can find someone who stocks any of it!
Here's why they don't stock our OEM REPLACEMENT parts. They stock this sh*t instead!
<img src="http://www.paysonarizona.net/CheckerRicerAd.jpg">
OK... the board MODS turned off all HTML tags!!! Copy and paste this into another web browser to see what I'm talking about--->
http://www.paysonarizona.net/CheckerRicerAd.jpg
RICE RICE LIGHT UP TAILPIPES, WINDSHIELD SQUIRTERS, HUBCAPS, LIGHTS LIGHTS AND MORE RICER LIGHTS, FART CANS GALORE!, ETC ETC ETC AND EVEN MORE RICE!!!! ALL SORTS OF OVERSIZED FART CANS AND BOLT ON AIRPLANE WINGS SO EVERYONE CAN OUT DO THE OTHER IN SIZE!!!!
AAAUURG!!! I throw a fit everytime I go into Checker, Autozone, or Pep Boys to NOT find what should be stocked, i.e. T-STats, Fluids, motor mounts, alternators, etc etc etc!
Napa seems to stock more OEM parts than the other Riced-Out pathetic auto stores but I still have to go to the DEALER for many of our parts for our now 5 YEAR OLD CAR!!!
Now, about the DEALER. Hmm.. some are better than others. Bill Luke here in Phoenix couldn't diagnose sh*t on this Chrysler when she first got it. They diagnosed a LOUD roar as she drove as being ROAD NOISE and suggested different tires. Well, after swapping tires twice and then finally using PERELLI's she still had the noise. So when we got together a little over 2 years ago I drove her car one time and could know a BAD WHEEL BEARING from ROAD NOISE!! Especially when I jacked up ONE TIRE at a time and could diagnose in 10 minutes which side! I got that WHEEL BEARING from Napa and swapped it in less than 1 hour on the front drivers wheel on her FWD car. Road noise GONE!!!! WHat the hell was with this dealer I thought???
2nd thing was she had this add on Chrysler 10 disk CD changer in the trunk. They added a FM MODULATOR to her FM Cassette radio it had this cable coming out from the radio to this controller they velcroed (velcro spelled?) to her dash. It would start locking up soon after she got the car and they looked at that half a dozen times under waranty for her and said it just needed to be "reset" and it was fine.
Then soon after we were together we got her a nice Rockford Fozgate head unit that plays CD's and mp3's. Funny ass sh*t here. I pulled out her stock deck and what do I see? The dealer PINCHED the wires to the CD controller between the stock deck and the housing cauising it to cut right into her wires in no time and SHORT them out intermittantly. I jerked that crap out and installed her new mp3 player. Then I repaired the damaged section of wires and installed it into her sister in laws car. The thing never messed up again. It was ALL THE DEALERS FAULT and they were TOO STUPID and TOO LAZY to ever pull the head unit out to LOOK at connections or they would have seen that sh*t they did in a HEARTBEAT!
LAZY LAZY LAZY DEALERS!
From what I see, it pays to go elsewhere if one dealer appears to blow like this.
I bought my truck at Ed Moses Dodge. They were nice but too far away to take my truck for service, and I got the 3 year maintenance agreement which came with my deal. They said I could take it to any dealer. So I been using Larry Miller. So far they have not given me any crap about my mods (he he he ) to my Dak and seem to give me honest answers to my questions so far.
Such as voiding waranties, i.s. the Flowmaster I installed. Well they said all that would void is my waranty on the exhaust namely the muffler which I removed. That's fair. And I bought a few parts for the Chrysler their. I need a Rack and Pinion for her car. It makes a CLUNK occasionally which is something I hear Cirrus and Sebrings do. The dealer manager guy told me he knew about that (1st time a dealer knew what that was) and it was in the rack. The part only (not installed) is $800 YIKES. Said for me to tell my woman to "choke it up until it gets much worse" for that kind of money. That's what I try to do but a woman hates hearing a POP noise from their car even if nothing is falling apart!
I asked about them changing my gears in my 4X4 from 355's to 410's or so. He immediatly told me not to have it done there (at the dealer he works at!) but I'd be better off for that type of thing by taking it to some other shops (non dealer). Whew.An honest answer or two from a dealer!!!
Just goes to show you not ALL DEALERS are the same. So just because thre are a few BAD DEALERS who don't want to help you in your best interest doesn't mean EVERY CHRYSLER DEALER is the same.
Hope this long story helps. Oh yeah and did I say, RICE SUCKS! Not only are they hard on the eyes with that sh*t, it has caused the local auto parts stores to swap out OEM replacment parts for Kazoo pipes and the such instead!!! I want the needed SHELF SPACE back for auto parts!!!

Message: I think parts stores carry ricer parts because like with us. we mostly go for engine and drive train upgrades and not really into the flashy show crap. so these ricers goes into the stores all the time and buy that crap. they need to make money and we have to suffer for it. I know when I was looking for a IAC only place that had one was auto zone. all the other ones I called said doesnt exist must be dealer part only. just like the TPS none of the parts stores had one in their listings. they all said its a dealer part. so I bought one from the dealer. hated to pay the price but cured my cold start flooding prob. something the dealership couldnt fix when I took it in alot of times. they told me the trucks runs rich before it warms up. popped in the new TPS and no flooding prob when I do a cold start. also had my heart drop when I changed the IAC I dropped the screw and took about 45 min to fish it out around the fuel rail lol.
I have come the the conclusion if its under warranty they dont want to fix it and say could not duplicate. I bet after warranty is over they can pin point the prob in a matter of seconds.
