Subject: help!! 98 2wd tie rod ends IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know or have any experience with replacing the tie rod ends on a 2wd 98 Dakota? After chewing up a set of tires and replaceing them, the tire dealer says he can't find a replacement tie rod end for my vehical. He said the dealer says the whole rack and pinion has to be replaced. What gives? Seems like overkill to me.

Message: 98 had recirc ball, not R&P. The tire dealer sounds a few pounds short of proper inflation.

Message: Sounds like you're on the right track to resolving your tire wear problem. I just had new (inner) tie rod ends and lower ball joints installed last week after five years of the dealer and others telling me there was nothing wrong with the front end of my '98 V6 club cab. I have had outside tire wear through 3 sets of tires in 67k miles despite the fact that it been repeatedly aligned to factory specs. Moog makes suspension bits for Dakotas of all years; that's what they used on mine. The dealer will always replace the entire component instead of the end or ball joint because it involves less labor and training for their tecs. And by the way, your truck does have rack and pinion steering; it's right there hanging off the front crossmenber for all the world to see!
