Subject: Tie rod ends IP: Logged
Message: I recieved some bad news on my 98 2wd Dakota. Tires Plus said that I needed new tie rod ends after they chewed up the rubber on the front tires. They said that there are no replacements for them that the dealer says I have to replace the entire rack and pinion. What gives? Surely someone makes an aftermarket tie rod end for this. Any help? I really like my Dakota otherwise.

Message: The dealer is pulling your chain to soak you for some serious bucks. I just had the inner tie-rods done on my '97 Dakota with 131,000 miles on it. I also replaced the upper and lower ball joints as well. The uppers probably didn't need to be done but the lowers were shot. I suggest you go to a local mechanic (check the background with the BBB) and get a few quotes. My work ran around $45 for each tie-rod and another $50 or $60 for the labor. Throw in another $50 or $60 for a front edn alignment and you'll be back in business.
