Message: I am getting an alarm for my truck soon. I had a Clifford in my last truck and loved it! I am looking at Rattler, they say it is the same as Viper, and another clifford.. price goes from 185 for the rattler to 249 for the clifford. I think I am going to stick with Clifford but was going to get opinions on the Viper/Rattler

Message: Wow... we are in the same boat.
I am getting an alarm installed on Friday, however I chose to go with the Viper 550E since it automatically includes the "engine start" feature among a host of other nice features (all of the standards...plus Viper is a pretty good name. I heard that the "Rattler" is just a stripped down version).
The only reason that I wanted that feature is... in the wintertime, when it is time to go to work, I'm sure there will be plenty of snow on the ground and frost in the air... getting into a nice warm DAKOTA is sure gonna feel nice!
On my "other" ride (a '96 T'Bird) I have an Alpine 8070 alarm... too bad they don't even make this one anymore. It basically had all of the same features, except the engine start... but it has been with me for over 10 years and two vehicles (I stripped it out of my '89 Probe when I traded it in).
Good luck on finding a good alarm!

Message: Go Clifford definately. I have a Viper with the remote start sitting in a box that I just pulled out of our 97 dakota. I would give it to you but I couldnt do that to a person. That was the worst alarm system we have ever used. I am going to install a Clifford in my truck. Just remember, if something is an option with any other alarm, it will be an option with a Clifford also.

Message: Uhh... could you elaborate?
What was wrong with the Viper? Was it too sensitive or not enough? Did it not provide adequate protection?
Please... more details! Thanks.

Message: Every now and then the remote start would work. Sometimes you would push the button for it to start and it would just all the sudden start 5 minutes later. Another one of our Dakotas with the same alarm went off once and we could not turn it off. It went off forever. We ended up having to call a tech out to turn it off. There was no explanation as to why it happened. Heres one that I'm not to sure about, while the alarm was installed the dash only worked half the time. We thought it might be some sort of loose connection. After 3 trips to the dealer and a couple to the alarm shop still no one knew what was wrong. The dash has worked just fine since it has been removed.

Message: Ok... well, I guess I am still gonna take my chances on it, however I definitely am going to make sure that I get a warranty in writing! And if they mess up, I'll get them to fix it (I highly trust my installer. I have had him work on some other stereo issues on my previous ride and I feel that he is very competent.)
Shoot... the last alarm I had, you had to spend another $200 just to get the remote start option on top of the price of the alarm (which was about $500 at the time). This one comes with it for only $399 including install at Circuit City.
I'm sure that they will back up their product.

Message: thx for the info on the viper... I kinda lean towards Clifford myself.. had one in my 90 Dak. The one I am looking at now is the Arrow III (I think) and it is 250 installed.. my last one was more than that and had NO options! this one has the keyless and starter diasble built in. My last one didn't, they were all add on modules
I think the clifford will be bought soon.....

Message: DarkFury, definately get the warranty in writing. It helped us when we had them work on it 3 or 4 times and also when we had them remove it. We even thought that maybe it was the installers so we hired another company for like $140 to look at it. They suggested that we have it removed.

Message: Well... I got it installed today.
So far so good... Lifetime install and brain warranty and 1 year on switches and sensors.
I really do like the "remote engine start" feature. That was something my "other" vehicle didn't have, but the Dak stays outside so I needed it!
I feel much better now knowing that the "snake" is watchin over the Dak.

Message: Does anyone know how the factory security alarm works on a '99 Dakota. Does it have sensors or anything, what type of alarm system is it and what does it do.

Message: What's the point of getting an alarm. just get som stickers that say you have one. it serves the same reason. No one listens to car alarms anymore. they go so often by mistake.
just my two cents worth.
