Subject: MPG with 3.92's & 32" tires
IP: Logged

Message:
I am looking at purchasing a new 2003 QC 4.7L 4x4 Auto with 3.92 gears and will be adding 32" tires also. I am trying to get and Avg. MPG city and highway with a setup similiar to this for research I am doing on new trucks. I know that the truck is rated at 14/18 MPG with 3.55's but I want 3.92's and am looking for some real world numbers. Any help from anyone with a similar Dakota is appreciated. Thanks

With the stock 265/70-16 tires, my 02 QC, 4x4, 4.7, auto was getting 15.5-16.0 on the highway at 70-75 MPH. My truck's window sticker was 13/18 MPG. Now, the 02 auto was only a 4-speed, while the 03 auto is a 5-speed. The 265/70 tires are about 30" in diameter with a circumference of 94". 32" tires will have a circumference of about 100" So, you'll turn about 6% fewer tire revolutions with the 32" tires vs 30" tires at the same speed. A truck with 32" tires and 3.92 gears will have the same engine revs as a truck with 30" tires and 3.68 gears at the same speed. My gut reaction would be that with the 5-speed auto and larger tires you would see no more than a 1-1.5 MPG improvement over what I'm getting.

Thanks for the replys. I am more worried about City then highway since 70% of my driving is city. Hopefully with an exhaust, air intake and synthetic oil I will be able to avg. around 15 city which i would be very happy with on a V8 with 3.92's. Thanks for the help.
