 Subject: what the hell is this switch for?

I have a little toggle switch below the steering wheel and under the dash, more closer to the park brake release handle. Its on the on position and doesnt seem to do anythink when i toggle it off. anyone know what this is?

If you bought this truck used, it is probably for some fog lamps or something the previous owner had. Look and see if it has wiring coming at the back, and follow the wires.

the wiring actually goes into the main harness of wires going back thru the firewall, well it sure looked factory installed and there is nothing else hooked up like fog lights other than the factory ones i have on. i did buy it used but barely used, the owner had 15000 miles on it. well back to searching the wires out, i just thought maybe it was from factory and someone would know.

It could be an alarm disarm switch that is used when in a parking garage or when it goes in to dealer or garage for any kind of maint. so tha the alarm doesn't go off all the time.

the o/drive toggle? mine is in the shifter, unless theres an override or something like that. oh ya ben, good idea. gonna go try the switch while driving. its just so hard to reach,the only reason i noticed it was cuz i was installing my kc daylighters and i passed the wiring through that area.

If it has nothing to do with the remote starter it could be a kill switch. Have you tried to start the truck with it off if the truck does not start then you have a kill switch on it.

turn on your lights and have someone stand behind the truck when you toggle it. The license plate light might be toggled, but using that while running isnt really effective. Try pressing the brake. If it is on the factory harness, you prob. have a brake light kill switch, or even a full taillight kill. These are very effective when running in rural or wooded areas at night and therefore very illegal -

I have a toggle switch much like what you describe, but mine turns the headlights on and off. would be effective if I had a plow or something.

Turn the switch on / off... first try with the truck off.. then running but not moving.. then driving slow like on a dead-end or a backroad or something... Eventually something will trigger....

how the hell are we supposed to know? its obviously aftermarket, thats like asking us where certain scratches and stains have come from. Just cause its on a dakota who knows.

I have noticed lately that the lights & TV in my den have been shutting on & off just randomly. Perhaps your switch is somehow wired up to the plugs in my den. If you find that out to be true, can you please leave the switch in the "on" position? I am having a terrible time keeping up with all the new Anna Nicole Smith episodes on E! with the power off.

cuz the wiring goes back into the main harness and i dont want to have to rip apart the split loom which is all sealed. the reason for the post was to see if someone had info about it incase it wasnt aftermarket. And it worked, thanks DEAVER,(ahole) it turns out it is the command start.

on my dak and all newer daks for that matter the speed limiter is wired to the fog lights so when you hit the limit they flash maybe some one wired it to a switch to kill the limiter

Was the previous owner a British Chap who wore a nice black suit all the time? Maybe it controls rear 50 cal machine guns hidden behind the tail lights or drops oil all over the road to cause those following to wipe out.

I dont know who the prv owner was but i know everytime its switched off/on i check the forum and some dumba$$ leaves a stupid remark. Think i'll leave it off, wait i think i'll go and toggle it again to confirm. See next post to find out if switch was toggled.
