I've got a 2001 CC 4wd with 22k miles that's developed a rattle in the front right corner. I'm suspecting the brake area because when I apply a small amount of brake pedal pressure it disappears. I pulled the wheel today and can see the inboard pad against the caliper piston seems to be moving around and I can rattle it. Is there suppose to be a spring clip attached to the pad that holds it in place on the pistons inside diameter? If so, I believe it went south on me. Also, I know that brakes aren't warrenteed for this long, but would this be a part that would be because of the nature of the claim? It broke, not wore out? The truck stops good without any vibrations so if they would pay this time, I would just as soon let them.

Hey Greg,
I had a 2001 quad, same rattle problem with the brakes. What happened is the inner pad has a clip mounted to it(not removable), it has three fingers that hold it into the caliper. They are pretty flimsy and are broken. Save yourself a bunch of aggrevation. Go to you local parts store and get some "disc brake quiet", it a rubbery glue that will secure the pad to the caliper and stop the rattle. Same function as the clip.
Cost of brake quiet $1.99
Cost of not having to DEAL with the dealer---priceless

Do I just put it on the back of the pad where it comes in contact with the calipers piston or also where it has the notches on both ends of the pad for sliding on the caliper? Just a small amount I'm assuming.

Just put it on the area where the pad contacts the caliper piston. It will stop the rattle and will work as a vibration dampner, so you don't get that annoying squeaking sound either.
Put enough on, you don't have to be super neat with it on the pad---it doesn't wash off your skin too easily

my drivers side anti-rattle clip(you can see it the outside of the caliper thru the rim. It is a piece of spring steel) fell off one day. Since it isn't considered a "wearable" brake item and I remember having at least 20000 miles on the truck at that time I had a dealer replace it for me at no charge

Must be your in tight with your dealer then. Mine 01' QC has done the exact same thing. The rattle springs rusted off (so the dealer says at least). I had it in the other week for them to look at a rattle in the truck. Not only are they not covered under warranty ("wearable item"), they charged me $40 for the inspection. For those of you who care. It's Krane Chryler in Lapeer. Do NOT go there for service.

Thanks for the advice. Stopped by the area Car Quest today and got the Brake Quiet goo. I'll give that a shot as soon as it stops raining. Is that a 7mm allen head socket I see there? Or is it a torx head?

it's a 7mm allen.. The goo works for the inner clip being busted, haven't tried it on the outer.

I just got done applying the Brake Quiet to the inner pad. I let it set up for about 15 minutes before reinstalling it. Time will tell if the rattle is gone. BTW, the back of the inner pad was total rust where the clip is riveted on. 2 of the fingers were like tinfoil and not doing a whole lot of good. Thanks for the help Ed.
