I saw a shop selling recycled motor oil.
What is recycled motor oil?
Why would someone use used oil?

Recycled or re-refined oil is perfectly good. Oil doesn't actually wear out it just gets dirty. I know this statement will bring out the flame throwers but I'm ready with my ceramic coated Nomex suit. When oil is re-refined it's treated just like virgin crude and it ends up like virgin refined oil.

It's the same idea as distilling water to purify it.

As long as the container has an API rating and the viscosity is marked go ahead and use it. Check out Recycled or re-refined oil is perfectly good. Oil doesn't actually wear out it just gets dirty. The oil is more than "dirty". It may be depleted of its additives package.

Recycled oils are technically re-refined oil. It essentially goes through the same process as raw crude oil only additional impurities are removed which come from blowby gases and combustion byproducts. Once re-refined, the purified base oil is formulated in the same manner as any conventional oil with additive packages for wear protection, oxidation stability, and acid neutralization. In essence its overall characteristics and physical properties are not any different to that of a conventional petroleum based motor oil.

Always gotta chime in, eh Stevie? Can't let somebody else answer a question about oil even though the question sat for almost 24 hours without any response and then when one is provided, with a link, you gotta "correct" it.

I followed the link and the 1st answer is bang on. Until you show your API membership or post youe ASE number, your "opinion" is no more valid than anyone elses.

I have a friend at a garage that has seen the owner mix a drum of filtered oil with new oil only to serve to an unsuspecting customer. Hope my truck never gets the "special treatment".

That's low. The oil actually does wear out - not only are additives depleted but it's sheared into shorter molecules; but the re- refining takes care of that.

Here is the thing about re-refined oils. Their are not any large companys doing this. This means that it is all micro refinerys. Some of them good and some of them bad. I have found that while large companys do not often give you the best product for your money they offer alot of accountability. If like knowing that my oil was produced by one of the largest refinerys in the world with a huge ongoing R&D budget. Their has been problems with small refinerys and blenders fudgeing facts. Look at N.C. and their oil recall. Look at the false API seal on them. THe only large company to sell re-refined oil on their shelfs that I am aware of is Ace Hardware. It is too cheap to pick up a case of Chevron Supreme for $.84 a quart or Delvac 1300 15W40 for $5-$6 a gallon. When on sale Valvoline is usualy $.49. Valvoline long life is like $5 a gallon as well. If you decide to go with synthetics then re-refined is out of the question!

For the record and to "help the environment" ...

Q. Can AMSOIL Motor Oils be recycled?

A. Regarding used synthetic oils, they can be recycled in the same manner as a petroleum-based motor oils. Synthetic oils can also be used in furnaces designed to burn waste oils.
