Subject: towing ?

I have a 2001 quad 4x4 4.7 and I am new to towing.

My dad has a 20 ft tandem axle car trailer for his antique car. the combined weight is almost 5500 lbs which is close to the limit.

My question is when he drives the car on the trailer attached to the truck, the weight of the car getting on the trailer lifts the back end of my truck until the car is fully up on the trailer, then it all sits fine and the truck pulls it no problem. Obviously the reverse happens when the car is driven off. It lifts about 4 or 5 inches probably.

Is this normal?

should i be worried that it will mess my truck up?

Skoorb,
You will not hurt anything if you are using a class IV or V reciever and you have the coupling latched and pinned (always pin or lock your coupling).

If you are towing with the factory bumper and do as you described you "WILL" bend the bumper and possibly damage you truck.

Dr. D

p.s.

Lifting the rear wheels off the ground while loading a trailer will also do no damage to your truck.

Jus tmake sure you position the car so the weight is slightly biased towards the hitch and not so that it is lifting the back of the truck... I would think about 3-4 inches of sag at the bumper is probably about right...

Put a couple blocks under rear frame of trailer when loading and you'll be all set.
