Subject: 91 Dakota, Runs then dies, MUST READ

Must read repair information for a few previous post's for this frustrating problem. 91 Dakota, 4 cyl, 5 speed, starts fine, runs for a couple of minutes, then will up and lose all power or die.
I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but as a 20 year Electromechanical Tech, I can analyze and fix almost any problem. This one had me but good. I decided to take the truck into the local Dodge dealer, and pay the professionals. Well first they changed the distributor plate. Still had the problem. Then they changed the injector. Still had the problem. So after 500.00 in repair costs, I gave it another shot. I warmed the vehicle up for a couple of minutes, and had a friend load the engine, while I looked under the hood.

Then I seen it. A high voltage arc from between the coil wire (between the boot and cable) going to, GET THIS, the heater core water hose. This was a new wire, medium grade, to the heater hose running acroos the back firewall. I couldn't believe my eyes, It's a rubber hose, but when the engine warmed up enough to circulate water, it provided a path to ground, through the hose. The hose was in great visual shape, no leaks etc.

If someone was to tell me this same story, I would have had a tough time keeping a straight face. But it is all facts. I tie strapped the hose up about 3 more inches, and I have never had the problem return in 9 months. I have given up trying to over analyze why a new medium grade coil wire would arc to a rubber hose filled with water. (older coil wire also did it.) and just accepted that this is and will forever be the most bizarre problem I will ever see.
