Subject: STR-4 faster than EVO & Sti (sort of) IP: Logged
Message: Something interesting about this import matchup:
Street start 5-60 mph
Evo 6.7
Sti 5.8
STR 5.9(number would be lower with a limited slip)
These numbers were found in the two recent issues of Car&Driver. If I remember correctly the STR had much better 50-70mph numbers than the EVO and Sti. Hmmm...at least 8k more for one of these imports and one still ends up saying "I got beat by a neon"! For those STI and EVO fans, I know, the extra 8K paid smokes the STR around any corner.

Message: Spencer, man, chill. He's posting crash ratings...something very important. Just because you're some world class super duper driver and never get in a crash doesn't mean someone else won't come and t-bone your a$$. You have no control over how good other drivers are.

Message: the 0-60 ratings for the EVO are in the high 4
second range. the SRT-4 competes very
nicely with the regular WRX but not the STI
and definately not the EVO. they tested the
EVO along with the new Cobra and Ferrari etc.
the EVO ended up spankin on the new cobra
0-60 and ran a very nice 13.1 1/4 mile. If I'm
not mistaken car and driver got it to a 4.8 0-60

Message: D,
I posted the 5-60 on the roll starts because 0-60 is no comparison! How can anyone compare AWD with a one legger? Besides, not every race is from a dead stop and it's interesting to see that the SRT can complete when it has better traction. The STR added .3 seconds from it's 0-60 but the Sti and EVO added quite a bit(STi added 1.3 & EVO added 1.8 seconds).
It would be interesting to see some 30-70 runs! No traction problems with less weight, I'm thinking the SRT would beat the Evo(already spanks it 5-60). The SRT against the Sti would be quite a bit closer, couldn't really say who would take it.
Ya, Motor Trend got a great time with the Evo(5k rpm launch) on that day(Sweet article). Motor trend also ran an article on the Sti in the same issue and it ran a 13.2. MT did say that the EVO had better conditions than the Sti and that could have been why the EVO ran faster than the more powerful STi.
This is no bash against the STi or EVO, the more competition the better! I'm actually considering buying a used WRX when I pay off and garage the truck(need a more economical vehicle).

Message: if you guys go to ATP TURBO.COM you will see that their srt is turned a 12.9, with a few mods. I happen to own one, and let me tell you, for 20k and about another 1k, my car is already in the low 13s, with stock tires.

Message: Depending on weather and temp conditions (and track altitude), your car will do mid 13's already. I love the SRT4 for the money. Freakin' nasty...

Message: D,
How about a boost controller? Or that Apexi controller I read about somewhere? A few more lbs should be sweet!

Message: Boost controller would work pretty well if you plan to leave the setup stock, but you really need something with more tunability for the long run (and more boost). I think on the lowest setting, the boost controller I had in my VW was 1 PSi over stock, and would push it to 14.5 PSi on the stock turbo. They have the exact same numbers in the latest eurotuner...

Message: UTEC is the way to go it runs about $985 but
it is fully tunable via laptop and comes with 5
pre mapped settings already tested and
dynoed by turbo XS. boost controller is okay,
but theres too many horror stories of blown
motors due to lack of self control. the UTEC
has been dynoed on a stock motor for 40HP.
with a turbo back exhaust and up-pipe the wrx
should be pushin some pretty impressive
numbers (compared to the 169 WHP stock)
