I had my dakota stolen a couple of days ago in winnipeg. All i found was my tilt steering lever. The police did find it, but i haven't seen it yet as i live 7 hrs away from the city and the adjuster hasn't looked at it yet. any body ever experience the shi*ty feelings of a stolen dakota. I didn't have a anti-theft devise or the factory installed immobilzer (the grey ignition key). Any suggestions for anti theft devices, stuff that works or really does not. I guess there is a real problem with joyriding in winnipeg (Canada)so if you visit be careful. My dakota is a 2001 4x4 ext cab v8 4.7l sport plus and is patriot blue pearl coat.

I had a truck stolen about 4 years ago, it really sucks. I have come to accept the fact that if a professional thief wants your vehicle, they are going to get it no matter what sort of anti-theft devices you put in. You can thwart some average wanna-be thieves and joyriders by installing some sort of quality alarm with a battery backup, wheel locks, jimmi jammers, and a transmitter device such as LoJack or GlobalGuard.

check out ravelco.com sounds very convincing, and great customer service...only reason i dont have it is cuz there is not authorized dealer/installer in my region, closest is az and i'm in WA!! i'mstill considering ordering it and bringing it to a trusted installer...not very expensive, but very effective.

I've been their before. It wasn't a dakota but I had a 98 Toyota Tacoma with a solid axle conversion on it, along with a 7" long travle suspension a 3" body, 38" Boggers. I had the top of the line viper security system, even had motion detectors inside, I had a battery and fuel interrupters, plus I live by half of the Louisville (Kentucky) police department. When they couldn't get it to run they dragged it for about 10 miles. The cops found it about 300 miles away in the bottom of a ravine. When I got home later that night all I found was some broken glass.

So as far as security systems I no longer believe in them.

Hood Lock!!

Can't start your car and can't get under the hood. The one I have uses a Medeco key and takes 8 minutes to saw through the cable. The only drawback is that you have to use the key to activate it everytime you leave your vehicle. Another alternative is coupling the hood lock with a siren alarm. The alarm goes off, they can't shut it off, or get under the hood to cut the battery power... Pretty secure.

BTW my hood lock costed about $150 installed.

in a dak, i could go under it, put my arm up, find the battery cable and cut it, so im sure a thief could do that too.

Back in my mispent youth, I repo'd cars. For the most part, there is nothing that you can do to deter a pro, joy riders yes, but if someone knows what they are doing, chances are you will wake up to an empt spot in the drive. Some major wastes of money, the Club, as the steering wheel is easily cut, and the club comes right off. Car alarms are sort of a waste, as people are immune to sounds of alsrms, plus they are easily disabled. The best thing I have seen is lo-jack, but, there are tools, expensive tools, that kind of scan the vehicle. One thing you can do, and it is inexpensive, is install a a kill switch, to either the battery, or the power wire to your coil. The coil being the best option, just make sure you put the switch where it cannot be easily found.

The best thing that I've seen is the devise that you put around the brake pedal and pull the rod and you have a steel bar that does not allow you to press the brake pedal at all can't remember the name though.

One that I've heard that works:
A fuel pump switch.

Won't stop a pro, but when your car cuts out and won't restart after about 5 seconds it makes it hard to drive off. This was found out when a hotrodder's car was stolen, and the thief didn't make it down the block. The cops did a report, he flipped the switch, and drove it back into the garage.

Yup, kill switches. Dateline did a story on car thieves. They put several anti theft devices on a car and let two teenage car thieves try to break in.

They got through the club with a hack saw, clipped the wire to the alarm, used liquid nitrogen on a break pedal lock, one kid got the hood up before the other got the door unlocked.

The only thing that stopped them was they couldnt find the kill switch.

The kid did say though, that if they couldnt jack the car they would just trash it then. We cant win.

I too live in Winnipeg and have had my 97 dakota, 4x4, 5.2, slt, 5 speed, broken into 3 times in the last 2 years. I have the factory alarm but the warning light on the dash seems to go out after 1 minute. I believe that that makes it look tempting to kids. I have laid out enough money on getting it fixed. I wish there was a way of reinforcing the door handles. Does anyone know of a way? All 3 times the handle was popped out of the door useing a screw driver or something..... I would really like to deter the non pros and have a little piece of mind if possible.

I had this happen to a 89 GMC I had. I walked out of the store ( this was at 1 in the afternoon so this guy had balls). So I walk out and the dude is in my truck. busted window and he was working on the steering column. I approached and grabbed him by the neck and pulled him out of the truck. in return he stabbed me with a screwdriver in the left hand ( I went to block it) so to make things even I grabbed his arm and snapped his elbow backwards. the cops got there and they got him. My wife was a basket case. the base MPs came out ( I was still in my uniform) and everyone wanted a report. I absolutely hate thieves of any kind. and since the kid was 16 I was gonna get charged with assault. but the DA ended up charging him with assault with a deadly weapon, breaking and entering and attempted theft.
I feel for you bro.

As for anti theft I did this to my camaro. it had these light switches on the rearview mirror. Basically I would act like I was adjusting my mirror and flip the switch. Anyone watching wouldnt think anything of it. those mirrors cost abotu 5$ at the junkyard. I took it apart so the switches had to be in a certain position to make a connection. If you want to get tricky you can install a remote controlled relay and tuck it somewhere. I used one of my wireless remote for the off road lights I have and wired it in my harness this way without turning that relay you cant start the car at all. Im a electrician and jsut got soem parts and made them work.

Ive heard that they have tow trucks now and they will jsut tow the car away if they want it bad enough. Personally now I could care less if they steal it. whats inside ( all my work stuff) is harder to replace

For what it's worth:

My old neighborhood got hit by a crew that stole four cars right out of the driveways one night. Both neighbors on either side lost their cars, but my truck was untouched (stock alarm only). The detective that questioned us wondered why, so he asked me to start it up.

VAROOOOM!

Ah-ha!

He said they either noticed the exhaust tips, or had scouted the neighborhood beforehand and had possibly heard the truck for themselves. He said the last thing a car theif wants is to be cruising through town in a car that gets noticed.

So don't invest in an alarm. Buy flowmasters.

I have used a kill switch on my last 2 trucks.
Both 5 speeds with clutch disable switch.
I take the switch off of the clutch kill and put two male connectors on the post.
run two wires from the switch to a toggle switch hidden anywhere you want it.
very easy if your truck is a 5 speed. I like this option becasue I don't have to plumb in a relay.

good luck.

Jaggy,

I've asked you before, and heard about this guy on the radio talk show this am. Is that pic 'The punisher'?

Anyway, I think you're saying, that the switch I have, that won't start the truck without the clutch being pushed all the way, is then wired to a toggle instead of thru the switch on the pedal?

That's a great idea, hell, may even do it myself!

Todd

Yes it is the punisher.

The only problem is that if a person wants to bypass then all they need to do is cut wires and twist together. (If the toggle is that well hidden)

If you go with a single throw toggle then you have to remember to throw it, if you go with a interrupt style (not sure what term is) you have to have a way to put in "valet" mode.
