Message: it's a scare tactic for the dull and ignorant to buy brakes. I had one moran tell a client that " I wouldn't drive with those brakes" " would you trust your kids to those brakes.
You're alright it's just BS for business.
With no or minimual brake lining you will stop your truck. PS they don't go by percentage they go by actual inches. How does he know what you started with?

Message: oh and brakes squeel because of built in wear indicators and not because of non-existant rivets

Message: Don is right. All these other idiots have no idea what they are talking about. One fool actually said they are measured in inches. Unless the shop measured a new set of pads and then yours they would have no idea that they are 50% worn. That is his best estimate. That is also how it is done. They tell you approx. how much you have left in a percentage. How many miles do you have? If they are 50% worn than you know in about the same amount of miles they should be worn. You can check them in about a minute so just keep your eyes on them. Also, they do have rivets. They are under the brake pad material. When you are down to them it is too late and you will also have to turn your rotors or even replace them. I would buy some new ones and keep them around your house untill you need them. That way you can also see how much material they have when new. When they get thin just stuff the new ones in. If the rotors are not warped you can get away with just stuffing the new pads in. I would also just get the factory pads. They are engineered to work specifically for your vehicle.

Message: I usually wait till the rivets grind halfway thru the rotors...actually you really don't want to follow my lead.....lol, My wife hates it...I'll drive around for a month with the brakes grinding before i replace them. guess it's just my way of living dangerously and costly, usually need rotors when I do brakes.:)
