Subject: HELP new to mods...what should i do??? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys, just had a few questions about my truck. I have a 97 dakota 4x4 with the 5.2L 318. Everything in its stock, and i think i want to do a little upgrading. Im going to be selling my ATV so i should have some money. I want to make my truck look like it can handle the mud, but i dont want to get into hardcore mods like lockers and axles and such. so what i was thinking was a set of 32x11 inch mud tires(i have 31x10.5 on now) and an exhaust system. and maybe a roll bar with some lights on it. where would i get this kinda stuff at? in g eneral how much would all this cost? i have some truck magazines with this stuff in it, but i want to avoid ordering out of a catalog or the internet. when they say in a magazine, the price of a mud tire, is that for one tire or a two? should i go with a chrome wheel or a black wheel(have stock grey wheels now, the truck is black)and i will probably need a place to install this stuff for me. would this make my truck look alot better? what do u gusy think. sorry this sounds so noobish, im just getting my feet wet here, trying to see if going through the trouble to spend the money on this stuff is worth it in looks. thanx for the replys

Message: With 32X11.5's you will need to change the backspacing on the new wheels, so they don't rub on the frame. Any good tire store that sells you the wheels and tires should know how to make it work. Also, you will have to raise it at least an inch or two so that the tires won't rub on the wheel well. You can do this 3 ways: 1. cheap way - crank the torsion bars and put an add a leaf in the back. Cost under $75. 2.Medium - PA body lift 2" is $160, 3" is $200. 3. Expensive - Rancho suspension lift is about $1300. For the exhaust, any good muffler shop can install cat back duals or you can order a kit that you can install yourself. You can get a good muffler for $50 -$100. Get whatever brand you like the sound of the best. My opinion is that I like the Flowmasters, but you may not. Ask the shop to hold a couple different ones up to the pipe after the old one is removed, so you can hear th edifference. Cat back duals with muffler about $300. As far as wheel color, whatever you like. Personally I think black trucks with black wheels look sharp.

Message: awesome, thanx for the info. I did a little searching on what specifically i want to do. this is what im thinkin: 31x11x15 thornbirds, very good looking tire, not sure if its gonna make to much noise. they have it for 129.95 a tire(white letters) at desert rat. then i was thinking of mounting those on a set of black rock crawler steel wheeels, not sure what width to get tho, if i go with a slimmer wheel, will that make the tires buldge? sicne the tires would be 11 inches wide, would an 8 inch wide wheel be to much, or should i just go with a 10 inch wide wheel. i dont really want my tires to look like baloons, so i want to keep the buldge to a minimum, what do u think? then i was thinking a 3 inch body lift. it will easily clear the 31 inch tires, and will be a noticable altitude adjustment(which i want) where do i find a 3 inchy body lift, and who installs those? i hear that they are pretty complicated, cuz u have to lenghthen wires, steering compnents, gas tubes, and what ever else. i just dont want to have a bunch of problems surface after i get it installed. and for the exhaust i was thinking a flow master high flow muffler, then Y it out into 2 pipes exiting straight back, with chrome steel tips cut at a slanted edge. OVER VIEW: black 1997 dodge dakota with 31x11 inch thornbirds on black steel wheels, with a 3 inch body lift and a straight back dual exhaust system. What you guys think? this sound good???

Message: The exhaust you're suggesting is exactly how I have mine. I've been very happy with it. I wouldn't put a 3" body with 31" tires it'll make them look too small. If you want to stick with 31's, a 1" Tbar crank & leaf spring is a better option. Thornbirds are great off road tires, but will drive you nuts on the road with noise. It's cool at first, but after a week you'll want to dump em. If you're not going to do much off roading, get some AT's they look fairly aggressive and they're MUCH quieter than MT's.
