Subject: Installed centerforce dual friction...
IP: Logged

Message:
I just installed a centerforce dual friction in my 97 CC 4WD 5.2 and when the clutch just begins to engage, it makes kind of a high pitched "skreee" sound until the clutch catches. The clutch is engaging properly and does not slip but it does make this noise. I resurfaced the flywheel (had a machine shop do it) and installed a new throw-out bearing. It only makes this noise when first taking off in first gear or when using reverse. It is not audible when shifting at other times. It also seems to be a little louder when the engine is cold. Everything works as it should but it makes this sound. Centerforce says that it takes approx 500 miles of street driving (not highway) to break in a clutch. I have gone about 250 of easy street driven miles. Has anybody else experienced this? Ideas?

mine dosent make a noise at all. how loud is it? do you have to really listen for it?

ill double check tomorrow, and pay a little more attention to it

It's somewhat faint, you'll only hear it with the radio off and starting from a dead stop. It'll only happen when the clutch just begins to engage the flywheel/pressure plate and takes hold. I can only hear it in first (from dead stop) or reverse.

sounds like the pilot bushing is bad. Actually in the daks its a pilot bearing. It is in the crank snout. I usually lube it with just a touch of wheel bearing grease when I do a clutch. A bad one would make a sound like you are describing. Did you somehow wash the grease out of it when taking the flywheel off, spraying wd40 on the bolts??

Just a few ideas, but a bad pilot bearing would make a simular sound to what you are describing

I've been kinda thinking it might be that... I didn't think to replace it when I had it out to be machined. You are right it is a bearing and not bushing. Would it make the noise only as the clutch was begining to engage and not at all times? Wouldn't it do it in neutral? I really don't want to pull it back out for that unless I have to, it's pretty much a pain in the butt.
