Subject: Cruise Control? IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know if setting the cruise control saves on gas mileage? I am looking for ways to save on mileage, any little bit would help.
I know that getting a tonneau cover will help some so I am working on getting one for my new truck.
I am having a hard time adjusting to the gas mileage on this truck because I just got rid of my car which was getting 25-30 MPG on the highway. It seems this truck is getting about 15 MPG, which is almost half. It's a 1999 Dakota Sport, V8, 4x4.
Thank you in advance for your input.

Message: It should help a little. Tried to check this about a year ago, and I could get an extra .5 mpg or so using cruise a bit more and gunning the engine a bit less in city driving -- still gun it on on-ramps though.
I also added a high-flow muffler which added about .5mpg. A high-flow intake added about 1 mpg. The tonneau added another 1 mpg.
These mods don't really save me much money since I've spent $450 for an extra 2.5mpg. I figure I save about $20/month. The more important benefit, in my opinion, is that I don't have to go to the gas station as often.
Has anyone added a bigger gas tank to their Dakota?

Message: Most mods that save gas, don't save enough gas to pay for the mod. Cruise always helps when used on flat ground. There is some question about what to do in hills and mountains. There are 3 different styles for hilly ar mountainous conditions. 1) use cruise, 2) gas it going down hill to build up speed (above speed limit) and coast up the next hill, 3) coast down the hill and as far up the next as possible before giving it just enough gas to make it over. No proof yet as to which one is better.
