Subject: Noisy Engine IP: Logged
Message: My 93 3.9 V6 is real rattly sounding when idling. It sounds like a real sloppy timing chain. Is this a common noise for that engine?

Message: My 1990 had the same noise and yep it was the timing chain, drove it with the noise for another 60,000 miles though before finally changing it.

Message: Would you happen to know if the 3.9 is an interferrence engine. I'd hate the idea of doing a whole bunch of expensive damage because I allowed the timing chain to break while driving it.

Message: Most likely you wont break a valve anything if you "jump time" (as its refered to with American 6's and 8's)
It can happen though.

Message: If you strip the nylon teeth off the cam gear and the chain jumps timing, the valves will hit the pistons. The timing chain is cheaper than valves and pushrods. Just my opinion. Dan

Message: the 3.9L is not an interference engine, its american. it will not hit the pistons to the valve

Message: Thats funny, I just replaced two heads on a v-6 that had the chain jump time. Bent four intakes and three exhausts. Two pushrods were trashed also.

Message: odd cause i changed the timing chain in my 93. had to slack of all the rockers to bring the crank and cam to TDC, a guy who wasnt in a hurry to start a 2500km trek would have done this before removing the chain and gear assembly. another note the 93 i have has steel gears old and new, no nylon. the nylon may have been a change after to queit the engine a little.
