Message: I have seen alot of posts regarding Air Intakes systems, some that have included Hoods. Aside from the "looks only opinions" what are the best "performance and Economy" options available. I have seen the Cowl Induction Hoods, and the Shaker Hoods (I like the look of that one). I have seen the K&N systems (I actually have the K&N system) and the the others too. I have been told that Amsoil has a better one, less restriction, that the K&N. I am looking for real time knowledge, or even better yet Facts based on data. I have a 2001 5.9 Quad Cab, but would tend to believe air intake advantages would be the same regardless of engines/Exhausts/Chips/TB's etc.... Could you have too much air available?

Message: Too much air available will loose noticable, streetable torque without other mods: cam, pcm flash, etc.
You will gain power in the higher rpm range wich may lower et's ( again dependant on mods ).
As far as filters go, K&N-amsoil etc. they are a gauze element with oil. So differences should be minimal if any. Any gauze filter will easily out perform paper filters (of course).
My preference in hoods would be cowl induction. Shakers are cool looking but you get several advantages with cowl hoods. More under hood space, the cowl removes under hood heat, and actually pulls cooler air in from the windshield vortex.
Sorry I cant offer data based info, just real life experiences.
