I have gone ahead and decided to get in on the group buy since I will be having to replace my catalytic converter this week at a muffler shop. I plan on getting the gibson catback because it sounds like I can do it myself. I looked under my truck at my exaust today and noticed it is not welded from the cat back already, but uses a few clamps. People have told me this could be hard to take off so I will let you know how it is now. There is the cat that goes into a 18" piece of slightly larger diameter pipe. On the other end of that 18" pipe is the muffler which looks like it is the same diameter pipe that the cat has on it. My question is, are there any tricks to getting off the middle 18" pipe that joins the cat and muffler? I dont have access to a torch so I will have to use hand tools. Also, do I order the new gibson to go in or over the joining 18" piece of pipe? Sorry this is so long.

In the days leading to your instalation spray a lot of WD-40 or liquid wrench on all of the clamps nuts and bolts. Do this twice a day leading up untill your installation. The first thing you do is seperate the cat from the exhaust. Then just undo everything from the clamps and the only thing you want left when your done is the factory hangers. So all you do is hang the gibson from the factory mounts and connect it to the exit of the cat. Get your self a good set of wrenches Long ones that you can apply force to and get a socket set. A hammer is also good for breaking the rust and stuff. Gibson gives pretty good instructions.

The only pipe you should need to seperate would be the joint just after the cat. You can leave the rest of the exhaust system assembled and just pull it out in one big piece. My truck only had about 1300 miles on it when I did mine so everything was pretty clean under there. After removing the clamp and hangers I just sat behind my truck pulling and wiggleing it for about 15 minutes. I had to heat up the pipe at the joint to expand the metal enough to come apart. Without the heat I would have been pulling on it forever. I had my entire cat back done from start to finish in about 45 minutes. Hope this helps.

I just put on a flowmaster cat back by myself and all I did was hack saw the old exhaust off because it was IMPOSSIBLE to just unclamp it. It proved to be a lot easier. Good luck!

Try removing the clamp and then lenghtwise along the pipe run a dremel with cutoff wheel about 2-3" to 'unzip' the stock pipe. It can be pried open a bit to enable it to slip off. If you want to return to stock it would be easy to weld the seam.

When i installed my Gibson dual exhaust, i had to cut 8" back from the stock muffler. I used a hacksaw and a cut-off air tool. It made it pretty easy.
