I have a 2003 dakota. Problem is that the gas gage is off by over 20 percent. Dodge says this is normal. I say it is bull. Seems that dodge refuses to honor its warrenty obligations to repair problems, Any one else have this problem and how did you fix it other than dropping the tank and fixing it yourself

What do you maen off by 20%??? If you mean when the guage reads "E" it only takes 18 gallons to fill, that is perfectly normal for any new car made in last 5-10 years. It's to keep the procrastinators from running out of fuel because they let thier guage get to E and beyond before finding a gas station. The fuel pumps in our trucks are in the gas tank, and the gas helps cool them. By running down to E and trying to suck the last drop out of the gas tank all the time is hard on the pump and will cause it to fail early. You can usually get another 30 miles out of the tank when the guage hits E, and if you have the overhead console, you can usually go another 40 miles after it reads 0 miles to empty.

I have six gallons left when my low fuel light comes on. If I could I`d have the PCM flashed to come on at half that value. To hell with the fuel pump!

You coudl always put black tape over the light for the low fuel. I actually like it coming on. Then I know I have about 60 miles of driving before I need gas and can start looking at gas prices, and know if I can push it to the next city where gas will be cheaper than the lone stations by the side of the road. Of course I drive long distances often too. My light comes on with 40 DTE on overhead computer. I also know I can drive to work and back home twice after the light comes on.

Be glad your gauge is consistent. I have a Ford Taurus (wife car, I have the Dakota) that has a random number generator for the gas gauge. One minute it is full, the next its 1/2, then it 3/4, then empty, etc. We’ve already had various parts replaced once (cost us $$$) and now we just watch the mileage. Actually, sometimes it works...

I have a 1999 V6 4X2 and my gas gauge is jacked. I have a 22 gal tank (or so the sticker says) i have ran it a good 60 miles past E and i will only fill up with 14.5-15 gal. Dodge says that the fuel gauge is not covered by warrenty. SO if you figure out how to fix good for you.

It's not the guage, it's the fuel sending unit in tank.

Just got a 94 Dakota 5.2L 4X4 filled the tank but gage read empty. Truck has sat for about 5 to 6 years. Is there a fuse or something I can check before pullling the tank

You can just fill the tank and reset the trip counter by the odometer. Just refill it before it reaches 300 miles. Mine broke years ago. The empty light still goes on when there is 1/8 tank left though so I never ran out of gas

More than likely, sitting for that long the sending unit is toast. I'd use the trip odometer method. Had a car years ago that has an untrustworthy fuel gage. I drove it for several years like that and never ran out of gas on the road. Sputtered into a station once but that's it.
