Subject: dodge viper rims on a dakota? IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering if the 2003 viper rims would fit on a 99 dakota sport 2wd, without rubbing. I might be able to get four of the front rims, thats why I was wondering.

Message: i dont know dude those things have a lot of positive offset. You may need adapters to bring the rim mouting flange out from the hub. I would measure the backspacing

Message: How a tire fits is based upon a few of different measurements. Everyone looks at the overall tire height when selecting tires but tire width; rim width and offset (backspacing) also play into the equation. When you change one of those measurements, you change the geometry of the wheel’s movement within the wheel well. As you decrease a rims backspacing, you increase the amount of lateral movement that is required for that wheel to pivot when turning. A good example is this image here. Click it to view it larger.
This is a scale drawing of a 31x10.50 tire from above. A 31” tire needs about 32” of space to pivot +/- 20 degrees if the pivot point is aligned with the centerline of the tire. Move that pivot point towards the inside edge of the rim 25%(2½”) and the same tire now needs about 34” to pivot the same +/- 20 degrees. Same hold true for both tire and rim width, as you increase the width, the more room is required for it to pivot. If you switch to a 33x12.50 tire on the stock rim, you have effectively moved the inside sidewall of the wheel in an inch which is equivalent to decreasing the backspacing an inch. You have to look at it as a trig equation.
To answer you original question, if the backspacing of the new rims are equal to the backspacing of the rims you are replacing, you basically moved the inside sidewall in about an inch with the new tires. You may or may not have some slight rubbing on the frame but it would be close. I think you should be all right.

Message: Guys, do a search.
Yes, the viper rims will fit the dakota. The 5 spoke look awesome.
However, you will need four fronts.
You might rub some in the front in turns, but it's not too bad.
What shoots this idea down everytime it comes up every other month?
Price. Even used ones are going to cost you 1200 for a set. For that price you can get lighter, stronger, and better looking ones that wont rub.
It's a nice idea, but not practical.

Message: that explanation up there is 100% correct, but i had to re-read it a few times to get it...sometimes im just stupid like that i guess. heres a simpler explanation that i go by.
lay your wheel/tire flat on the ground, face down (the side that faces out when the wheel is on, but you probably knew that)...measure the space from the flange where the wheel bolts against the truck, to the inside lip of the wheel. that is your backspacing. a viper wheel will bolt on to a 6-lug dak, although like mike said, youll need 4 fronts cuz the rears are set up in width for a 315 tire...thats a tad too big for what weve got. if you can get a good deal on em, go with it, its a different look that not a lot of people have. good luck!

Message: Just read on the same subject on the Delphi R/T forums. The 18 x 13 rears can go on with a 1/2" spacer.
